Karkala, Dec 23: Two youths from Belman here, by helping out needy families in an innovative way, have shown what Christmas is really all about.
While in the modern day Christmas has mostly become more about celebrations and parties, Roshan Belman and DJ Mervin have come up with a unique 'free shopping' for needy families to underline the real meaning of Christmas - love, care, and helping each other.
"In Christian community there are many different denominations. So we thought of getting them all together on one platform to celebrate Christmas in a proper way. We produced a video on the topic called 'Christ & Christmas'. The impact or the outcome of this video is the 'Christmas Godali' concept," say Roshan Belman, a musician, and Mervin, a DJ by profession.
About 'Christmas Godali'
Roshan and Mervin, along with their close friends and family members decided to help 50 families with a capital amount of Rs 1,00,000. They then launched an offer of free shopping for the needy people worth Rs 2,000 per family.
With the help Sr Usha Stella, superior, Don Bosco Convent, Belman, and some reputable personalities, the two young men with their own efforts identified people who were in real need of help.
"We rented a supermarket for 4 days (December 21 to December 24) where all the needy people can come and shop whatever they need in these four days. But now this project has risen up to Rs 3,00,000 with the help of kind-hearted people (sponsors) and we hope 150 needy families will get the benefit of this project by Christmas eve (December 24)," they say.
The Christmas Godali Supermarket was inaugurated by John Cardoza, who has been attender at St Joseph High School, Belman from the past 30 years. "Because of his sincerity and dedication in his work from the past 30 years, we decided to give him an honour. He is the first benefiter of this Christmas Godali project. He purchased Rs 2,000 worth household items for his family," said Roshan and Mervin, adding that there were no political leaders or VIPs invited for the programme.
The Christmas Godali Supermarket is located ppposite Government Hospital, Belman.
"This is our own project and not organized by any social club or association. Our motto is to give the real meaning of Christmas to the society. We publicized this project through social media to inspire the people, especially the youths," they said.
The whole project video and accounts will be published soon on Roshan Belman's YouTube channel and other social media platforms.
