PM does 'jal-pujan' at Rs 3,600-crore Shivaji memorial, Congress cries foul

Mumbai, Dec 24 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday travelled in an Indian Coast Guard hovercraft to perform a symbolic 'jal-pujan' for the proposed Rs 3,600 crore memorial of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The 'Shiv Smarak' is coming up in the Arabian Sea, around 1.5 km from the Mumbai shoreline opposite Marine Drive or Queen's Necklace in south Mumbai.

He was accompanied by Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and a select group of other dignitaries.

Descendents of the great Maratha warrior, Udayan Raje Bhosale and Sambhaji Raje Bhosale were also present as the large ICG hovercraft vroomed off from Girgaum Chowpatty on Saturday afternoon.

At the designated spot in the Arabian Sea finalised for the project, where a makeshift floating mini-replica of the proposed memorial was created for Saturday's event, Modi poured water from a bronze vessel and threw some earth at the site to perform the 'jal-pujan'.

Later, on return to Girgaum Chowpatty, he was welcomed by a traditional Maharashtrian band as he performed another brief 'bhoomi pooja' for the memorial amidst sounding of bugles and 'tutaris'.

The Maharashtra Congress, meanwhile, strongly criticised the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena for preventing their silent, peaceful rally to protest against demonetisation here this afternoon during Modi's visit.

Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam said in a statement that he "has been placed under house arrest by the police since Friday night" and not permitted to leave his home in Andheri.

"What is this, Prime Minister Modi? We are a democracy, this is like a Hitler-Raj... We are not allowed to even raise our grievances in a peaceful manner.

"The media is barred from meeting me and I am placed under house arrest," Nirupam said.

In another stinging attack, Maharashtra Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant said "it is clear the BJP government appears to be extremely scared and perturbed and is unable to accept even a silent protest."

"We condemn the step of Maharashtra government to put Nirupam under house arrest. It is a Black Day for Indian democracy... this act confirms the fact that the BJP government has a sadist and fascist mindset, which deny the citizens' basic fundamental and constitutional right to protest peacefully," Sawant added.

Following the 'jal-pujan' and 'bhoomi-puja' for the memorial, Modi left for Bandra Kurla Complex in central Mumbai for several other engagements and a public rally.

Is it necessary to evaluate the monumental statues in financial terms i.e.profit or loss in the matters like having a national hearos statue, who have contributed to our national cause due to which we are now in a position to live in India. Just think, what would have been the case, without Shivaji's contribution to India.

The Rs 3,600 crore to be spent on the statue will be equivalent to:

It could pay for a micro-irrigation programme to bring water to thousands of farmers for over two years pay for new rural roads seven times over electricity projects five times over restore 300 medieval forts in Maharashtra.

How worth is spending $500 million on statues when the Indian government stated 22% of its population is below its official poverty limit?

Why government can't spend that money on hospitals, schools, shelters and health care?

What ever money they are gonna spend to make this statue they will not put it in the sea right, its gonna create employment for contracting companies, cements and other materials company will get business, engineers, labors and other related people will get job because of this project, so the money will be coming to the people indirectly, once the statue is ready people will go and see, even from out side the country people will come and visit again this boost the tourism and people of india are gonna make money out of it, but yeah you should know how to make ) congress never did something like this coz they had no great vision at all, its cool when these kinda things are built in middle of sea in foreign countries, but in India waste of money, grow up folks...

Its only in India that making a memorial of our history as a part of tourism is showed as a waste of money.
If making a memorial or a statue was wrong then why did they allow others to do it? 100 statues of 1lakh each makes 1 lakh was also a waste of money.

This money is not belong to the Government or Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It belong to the present Citizens of India. Distribute this Rs 3,600-crore among poor farmers in Maharashtra and prevent Loss of Life of decedents of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's subjects.

Instead of a statue which is just a show case, a sea bridge from Nariman point to Worli and named after the great Shivaji would be remembered with gratitude by millions of mumbaikars.
