Mangaluru, Dec 25: The 2016 special edition of Konkani literary magazine 'Arso', edited and published by Henry Mendonca, was released here on Friday December 23.

NRI entrepreneur, actor and singer Joseph Mathias was the chief guest on the occasion. In his address, Mathias said, "In our childhood days, we were getting many Konkani periodicals to read. But today we have very few periodicals mainly because reading habit among people is vanishing. Konkani people need to support the few existing periodicals which are actively promoting the cause of Konkani language and literature."

Surendra S Wagle, resident editor of Vijayavani Daily, Mangaluru, said, "Just because we covered the press conference news in our edition, we received a lawyer notice, that too from a 'paper'. Today, media people speak aloud about 'freedom of expression', but write maligning articles about fellow writers. When their motives are questioned they serve legal notices. Though it is hard to believe, it is true that media has stooped to the level of a 'terrorist outfit'. This needs to be condemned."

Recollecting his association with Arso editor Henry Mendonca, Wagle said, "I know Henry Mendonca from his college days and he was closely associated with revolutionary literary movement. During his college days he was writing in literary journals like Sankramana, Shoodra and others and I am happy that even today he writes with the same enthusiasm and insight."

Earlier, Arso executive editor Wilson Kateel gave a bird's eye view of the special edition of Arso 2016 and said the edition can be called as a literary ambassador of modern Konkani literature, music and cinema.

Multi-lingual writers Monica Mathias, Dublin, was felicitated on this occasion by Poetics Group. Group members Daya Victor Lobo, Felcy Lobo and Wilson Kateel presented a shawl, bouquet and memento to Monica Mathias.

'Face to Face', an interactive session with writer Monica Mathias was held on this occasion. Mathias shared her views on her writings including her inspiration to get into writing initially. She also answered questions from the assembled audience about the various aspects of her writings. H M Pernal, editor of Kittall.com, a premier Konkani literary website, moderated the session.

Ronald Sequeira, president of Konkani Writers and Artists Association proposed the vote of thanks.

First of all let me Congratulate HM Pernal and Wilson Kateel for their dedication to uplift konkani literate through their rich knowledge in the literary field. They both like two faces of a coin and they express what is right and condemn what is wrong. As Mr. Wagle said it is quite difficult to survive in this world with honest opinion and expression of freedom many times have been taken as a criticism and suppressed. Secondly, I also want to congratulate Monica Mathias for sharing her rich experience in writing stories and many of her works based on real life experience. It was wonderful to listen to her during Interaction. Finally, for ARSO Special edition which contains rich konkani literature and unique articles. Hats off to all great contributors for this special edition.

Congratulations to Monica Mathias, Dublin-Ireland on the occasion of receiving honor from Arso, Kittall and Poetics for her literary contributions in multi languages. Monica is not only a wonderful writer, she is also a wonderful person. When we visited Dublin few years ago, she saw my pictures in Dublin on facebook and invited us to their residence. Her husband Brian was the chauffeur for us to take to their residence and bring us back to the hotel where we stayed. Their Mangalurean hospitality was great with delicious food including dukra-maas.

On this occasion I want to salute Henry Mendonca and Wilson Kateel for their leadership in organizing such events to honor budding writers. Their encouragement and moral support will make writers to write continuously and enrich literary contributions. Thanks for honoring Monica Mathias and holding such a touching face to face event. God bless us all.

Congratulations to Ms. Monica Mathias and all others who were instrumental in Editing, Printing and Publishing the special editioin of "Arso" in Mangalore.

Our literary talents and abilities need constant surveillance and support. Ultimately, it is the readers that have to read those literary creations and express their positive viewpoints for the benefit of the Society.

Motivation is the KEY in every aspect of our life .When more readers blossom in the community and render positive support the literary work will shine abundantly by encouraging many others to read and digest the benefit of the Book.

Literary contributions also bring new outlook in the Society with new ideas and better thoughts. Again, it is the honest and unbiased opinion of the reader that matters. Same as the audience that listens to the Speaker and provides his or her own positive feedback so the every one else learns more and appreciates the good work of the writer or rhe Speaker. God bless.
