Heart-warming: Bahrain foreign minister visits his nanny, now 93, in Mangaluru

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Dec 28: They say we must never forget those who have helped us or been an important part of our journey of life. They may be our teachers who taught us the alphabet, maids and nannies who looked after us when we were little, a friend who stood by us in our toughest times, or a distant relative whose timely help saved the day.

In a heart-warming gesture, a top Bahrain diplomat, none other than the foreign minister himself, came all the way to Mangaluru to meet his nanny who had looked after him in his childhood.

Bahrain foreign minister Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, on Wednesday December 28 shared a picture on Instagram that would make every Mangalurean sit up and applaud the minister's kindness.

The picture is of Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa sharing smiles with Carmine Mathias, who is now 93.

"With my nanny who looked after me as her son since my childhood; Mama Carmine Mathias, at her home in Manglore, Karnataka..," he said in his post.

Carmine went to Bahrain as nanny to him and his siblings way back in 1959, when she was 35 and he was not even born. Recalling the love and care she showered upon the children, the minister said, "She came to Bahrain when she was 35 years old in January 1959. Now she is 93. She looked after my late brother Abdalla, myself and my two younger sisters Maie and Lulwa. She gave us the best of her love and care .. we cherish every moment in our life with her. May God bless her soul and give her good health and longevity."

The post has gone viral, garnering over 300 comments and over 4,150 likes in a matter of hours.

The minister, who is on a private visit to India also visited Kerala before coming to Mangaluru. While in Kerala, he visited Layla in Kollam, who worked as maid for Khalid's family for 21 years in Bahrain.

let's put this in perspective. Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa was born with a silver spoon. he grew up in luxury in air conditioned mansions and the best of chalets in Europe. To come to Mangalore to a humble home built of laterite with no carrera marble and persian carpet is indeed a sign of greatness. Wishing his excellency long life and god's blessings

Awesome...your Excellency. Personally I am an Indian national born and raised in Kuwait and my mother was the palace doctor to the State of Bahrain before her assignment in Kuwait. I am very grateful to Bahrain and Kuwait for my upbringing and to Kuwait, Qatar and UAE for my career in Corporate Communications both Aviation, Govt and conglomerates. Sincerely awed by the gesture extended to your nanny. When I was growing up my favourite phrase was respect the hand that rocks your cradle.

It is a great pleasure and memorable moment to meet our moushi mama carmin.. she is very active till now by the grace of god... my elder brother came to bahrain in 1978 followed by three of us including younger brother eppe... i was general secretary of HMS and many times interacted with her and used to ask her blessings and suggestions.... she was very quick to respond and used to encourage us.... especially when asked about some sponsorship for HMS activity.... Proud to say we are from her parish in mangalore and are her family members... when we were cultivating vegetables in mangalore she used to carry bahrain our mangalore traditional vegetables like thendli , alsande , kanghi kereng (red potato) which we used to cultivate in our farm .. bahrain royals like these vegetables too much she was saying ... this is all because of our dear moushi... now also i see she walks in mangalore from her house to church which is around 1. 5 kms from her home and back .
Thanks shaikh khalid for your visit to this noble soul.. this will be a most memorable moment for her in her life .
Finally we pray for good health peace of mind for shaikh khalid and his family.. we always remember this visit...Shaikh Khalids visit itself is a most memorable to all mangaloreans living in bahrain
Thank you daijiwoorld for this article....

I really feel honor for his noble gesture , I know her from my childhood but never met her personally , once I reach Bahrain her grandsons Mr Ashok R Montiero and Late Santhose Montiero introduce me, After that we meet frequently specially after the 4.15 pm Konkani mass , we both sit in vardavsn and eat pethrode, she was very much found of pethrode,we had small HMS group and her grandson was leading that group , it was lot of fun ,
She was very humble and generous , whenever I need something she use to give me , she made me feel like her own child, She was very god fearing never miss Sunday mass come what may, Even though she stays very far she make sure that if driver is not avialable she use to call her grandson Ashok to pick up us all the HMS group, And Mr Ashok is always available anytime,

she is always and forever Role model for me with kind gesture and down to earth nature,
She never live her house to anybody with empty stomach , she make something for them and feed them till their stomach is full,
I wish Moushi good health and always keep her in my prayers,

Thanks HE Prince Khalid for meeting our Moushi and give her your comfort , I promise you that we will not forget your noble gesture ,
Thanks to all the Royal family who take care of our Moushi in one way the other we greatful to you,

Great message to ponder during this time of joyous season when charity and goodwill becomes part of our Christian tradition added with a spirit of recolectioins and reflections.

People of Bahrain have always demonstrated a symbol of recognition of the past. India has always stood by with Bahrain thru our spirit of loyalty and respect towards Bahrain. Bahrain has always been a Sheikhdom filled with people of simplicity and kindness from the time of Shaikh Sulman and his sons Sheikh Issa, Sheikh Khalifa and Sheikh Mohamed. The merchant community of India was welcomed into Bahrain with a view to work together and that is where and how the trade between India and Bahrain flourished with the influx of Indian traders that were allowed to establish themselves firmly and successful in the Sheikhdom of Bahrin. Merchants such as Jashanmals, Ashraafs, Malabaris, Maganmals and many more have been there before the World War II. Rest of the expatriates followed the pathways of progress and hard work in Bahrain by creating strong links of trade, commerce and finance.

Passenger ships such as Dumra and Dwarka travelled every fortnight from Bombay to Basrah and return when there was no airport in Bahrin under the banner of B.I.S.N that stood for British India steam Navigation.

Many of the Bahrain Arabs came to India to educate themselves at Barnes High School at Deolali and later also at Alighar University.

The Post Office and also the Police Department of Bahrain was controlled by the British Administration in India.

The greatest asset of each and every Bahraini is that they all remember their past well and because of their strong foundation of civilization they remember their roots well. God bless the Kingdom of Bahrain and let the Bahrainis enjoy good health and happiness.

I lived in Bahrain from 1992 till 1998. I greatly loved the royal family and people of Bahrain. God bless them always for thier kind heart, genorosity towards all and freedom given to people in that nation. When I read this article and saw the photo it has greatly touched my heart. For a moment I prayed for the more such people to be born and serve to human so that this world will be great place to live. God bless Mama carmine, sheikha Lulwa and all royal family members. God bless all of you.

    Thanks Ashok.

I came to know all about your granny through this article. Above, I read more about you and her through a post from RP.

But what I did not know was that she is your grandma. God bless you and Mama.
