Mangaluru, Jan 2: Moolageni Vokkalu Rakshana Vedike (MVRV) will organise an awareness meeting for all Moolageni members and non- members at Don Bosco Hall on January 8.

Moolageni is a perpetual lease, as defined  under the T.P.Act. A tenant is entitled to enjoy the property permanently and his right to the property is inheritable. In the coastal districts, this system has prevailed ever since 1856 or so. The Moolageni tenants of the coastal districts wanted the right of the landlord to be vested in them that they could enjoy the ownership right to the property. The State Legislature of Karnataka accepted the requests of the Moolageni tenants and conferment of ownership on Moolageni Tenants Act 2012 was unanimously passed and this Act received the President of India assent on July 13, 2012 and came into force on December 20, 2012.

The Moolidar’s i.e, the landlords challenged the validity of this Act and filed a writ petition before the State High Court where the matter is pending. Though the landlords filed a petition before the High court for granting a stay order, the High Court did not pass any order for stay. Therefore, the Act has come into force and the Rules are framed, and the same came into force on November 7, 2016. The Moolageni tenants are filing applications before the Competent Authority under the Act for granting ownership right to them. They are willing to pay the compensation as laid down in the Act, which is 1000 times the Annual Geni. The process of filing the application and holding inquiry on such applications must continue as there is no Stay granted by the State High Court.
