Mangaluru, Jan 6: District in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai inaugurated a vehicular emission monitoring mobile van at Town Hall here on Friday, January 6. The programme was jointly organized by Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Mangaluru City Corporation, Regional Transport Department and Mangaluru Refinery and Petrochemical Limited.
Addressing the gathering Ramanath Rai said, “The Transport department is working hard on the emission test of vehicles in order to control air pollution. But, we are still witnessing air pollution from old vehicles which give out thick dark smoke. We had earlier restricted plying old vehicles due to the emission of thick smoke, but had to withdraw the decision after people opposed the move. The new method of monitoring vehicular emission launched today will help in controlling air pollution in the coming days.”
Prior to the programme, an environment rally was carried out from Light House Hill o Town Hall. Students from National Service Scheme (NSS) of several schools of Mangaluru took part in the rally.
MLA B A Moideen Bava, MRPL managing director H Kumar, MCC commissioner M Nazeer, environment Officer Rajashekar Puranik and others were present.
