Udupi, Jan 9: "We are putting forth our strong demand for separate taluk status for Kaup in the light of added impetus being given by the state government for decentralization. I am not driven by greed for political mileage through this platform nor do I plan to get any publicity. If a separate taluk is carved out, 24 government offices will be established here and this will benefit people of Kaup assembly constituency," said Kaup MLA and former minister, Vinay Kumar Sorake.

He was addressing the gathering after initiating he walkathon organized by Kaup Taluk Action Committee at Lord Laxmi Janardhana temple, Kaup on Sunday January 8. He said that setting up of services like taluk government hospital, sub-registrar's office, magistrate and other government bodies will make it a lot easier to access government services. He noted that Kaup was identified as separate revenue division even prior to Brahmavar and Byndoor, which are also vying for taluk statuses, during the British era. He said because of the background Kaup enjoys, the just demand for according taluk status to it is being supported.

The walkathon had begun at Hejamady on Saturday. After reaching Kaup and beginning its forward journey on Sunday, the Jatha ended at Balayipade, which happens to be the border of the local constituency. On the way, various organizations and local citizens offered grand welcome to the Jatha. Additional district deputy commissioner, Anuradha, who came there, received a memorandum containing the demand for taluk status for Kaup from the participants of the walkathon at Balayipade.

In addition to Sorake, president of Kaup Taluk Action Committee, Leeladhar Shetty, district JD(S) president, Yogeesh Shetty Balaji, president of Grampanchayats Union, Dr Deviprasad Shetty, Kaup block Congress president, Naveenchandra J Shetty, Kaup municipal president, Soumya Sanjeeva, Kaup Development Committee president, Vasudeva Shetty, Kaup Diwakar Shetty, various office bearers and other eminent leaders took part in the walkathon.
