Chikkamagaluru, Jan 12: M K Abhishek (21), native of Kikre village within Menase gram panchayat near Sringeri in the district, who was a commerce student of a college here, ended his life in the early hours January 11.
After the body of Abhishek was found hanging from a tree in a forest area near his home, students of his college held protest. A case stands registered against some National Students Union of India (NSUI) activists, college principal, and governing council of the college. It is said that Abhishek was overwhelmed by the fact that his name was mentioned in a case relating a dispute over a programme of paying tributes to soldiers filed with the police.
A programme to pay tribute to soldiers guarding the borders of the country had been organized recently at the college under the initiative of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Well-known orator, Chakravarti Sulibele, was scheduled to deliver keynote address to the gathering on that occasion. NSUI had opposed the programme beside holding a protest. Therefore, although the programme was held as planned, Sulibele did not attend it.
This development had given rise to minor friction between activists of NSUI and ABVP. A case had also been registered against ABVP activists, Abhishek, Anirudh, Kaushik, and Kartik Arjun, students of the college.
ABVP has given a call for state-wide protest on Thursday January 12 in connection with the above suicide. ABVP state unit secretary, Rajesh Gurani, who termed the incident as 'state government's gift of suicide to patriotic students of the state', stated in a release that his organization condemns the attitude of the concerned and will launch fight against this injustice all over Karnataka on Thursday.
