Bantwal, Feb 10: More than 200 pairs of buffaloes took part in the Mudur Padur double-track 'Kambla' which was held amidst traditional gaiety and fanfare before a large village gathering close to Kavakatte here, on Saturday, February 9. The 'Kambla' was inaugurated by Padma Prasad Ajila a descendant of the royal family of Alladhanagadi Aremana (palace) rulers.

Every year huge masses of people of both villages Mudur and Padur religiously organize the 'Kambla' under the able guidance and supervision of the former minister of transport B Ramanatha Rai. They enthusiastically participate and do their bit for the grand event by decorating the village streets. Every where there is an air of festivity. This year too they have done so and were seen celebrating the tenth anniversary of the 'Mudur Padur Jodukare Kambla' with great deal of enthusiasm and fervour.

The 'Mudur Padur Kambla' attracted large groups of participants from all across the coastal region and even from the northern parts of Kerala. Over the last decade or so, the event has undergone series of changes as the 'Kambla' committees have been given strict instructions not to torment the buffaloes. In keeping with these strictures the animals too were seen being treated more justly and humanely here.

It is basically to mark the tenth anniversary celebration, the organisers honoured the buffalo owners who have been making it to the kambla for the past ten years. In fact there were smiles all around on the face of the owners of the
new buffalo pairs who took part in the kambla for the first time, as they were paid an honorarium of Rs 1000 each as a kind of incentive.

Also present on the occasion were South Kanara Bus Owners Association president Rajavarma Ballal, former MP Ramanath Rai, Vogga Church priest Rev Fr. Andrew Leo D'Souza, Bantwal Taluk Panchayat president Chandrahas Shetty, Bollanthur, Mamata Gatti, president of South Kanara Mahila Congress, Kanchaalakshi, vice-president of Bantwal Taluk Panchayat.
