Jallikattu challenged in Supreme Court again, hearing on Jan 30

Jan 25 (PTI): The Supreme Court today agreed to hear on Monday the pleas of Animal Welfare Board of India and other animal rights organisations challenging the new law passed by Tamil Nadu Assembly to allow bull taming sport Jallikattu in the state.

The pleas were mentioned for urgent listing before the bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra.

The bench asked senior advocates Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Anand Grover to file their applications which will be taken up for hearing on January 30 when the Centre's plea for withdrawing the January 6, 2016 notification will be taken up.

In their applications the animal rights group has said that the new law passed by Tamil Nadu Assembly to allow Jallikattu has over reached the earlier verdict of apex court.

Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi had yesterday informed the apex court that Centre has decided to withdraw the January 6, 2016 notification allowing Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu.

The apex court, which had reserved its verdict on a batch of petitions challenging the notification, had said that the concerned bench would take a decision on when the application of the Centre would come up for its consideration.

The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment), Act, 2017 piloted by Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, was unanimously adopted on January 23 by a voice vote in the assembly after a brief debate.

Nearly 70 caveats have been filed in the Supreme Court seeking prior hearing if pleas challenging the new legislation allowing Jallikattu in the state come up for consideration.

The caveats were filed a day after the AIADMK government moved the apex court seeking a prior hearing before any order is proposed to be passed in the matter.

If Supreme court of India allows 'Jallikattu' keeping in mind of tradition of India there will be many banned laws will be challenged in the future.

India is land of many ugly traditions. Human sacrifice is one's common practice, some may even murder and claim it is tradition to appease God's.

I would also like to remind the court, it right to consume what once choice is fundamental right. If beef ban is upheld citing cruelty to animal and exports continue to drive the economy of the country court will be catch 22 situation.

If 'Jallikattu' is legalised for Tamilians aspiration, next Goans will demand 'Dhirio' Bullfight, Kambala in Karnataka and Mari habba to slaughter many more animals and birds.

Personally I feel Government should Ban all kind of Games related to animals or birds.
Horse race, Jallikattu, Kambala or Cock fight etc..
as usual in case of exception :
If It has religious or traditional background, Then it must be only one particular/related day it should allow and not for year or month.
Because if it is allowed for more than a day then there is high possibility of gambling or more cruelty will occurs.

Challenged in Supreme court for what??? Again SC will ban the Jallikattut but Modi led Central govt will ignore the court and they will bring the ordinance to play the Jallikattu. Supreme court, RBI, NIA all are became irrelevant under Modi regime. Central govt only the Superior authority of this country. Henceforth no one can expect the justice.
