Mangaluru, Jan 27: Scores of students led by All-College Students' Association along with Tulu film artistes, Yakshagana artistes, politicians and members of Tulunada Rakshana Vedike on Friday January 27 staged a strong protest at Hampankatta demanding withdrawal of ban on Kambala.

Hundreds of people including actors Devdas Kapikad, Naveen D Padil, Bhojaraj Vamanjoor, director-producer Vijay Kumar Kodailbail, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLA Mohiuddin Bava, Jagadish Shenava, Sharan Pumpwell, Satyajit Surathkal, Chethan Rai and others called for immediate government action to ensure continuation of Kambala.

Students from KPT, Canara College, Mangalore University College and others formed a human chain.

Addressing the protest, MLA Mohiuddin Bava said, "Kambala is a unifying sport that people of the district are closely attached with, without any barriers of religion, caste and creed. We will fight untilljustice is done."

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said, "Kambala has a vast history of 800 years and it is a religious practice and tradition of Tulunadu. Today the student fraternity has gathered here to protect Kambala and prove youth power. We will fight until justice is done. PETA is projecting Kambala in a wrong way claiming that buffoloes are subjected to cruelty, but the truth is buffoloes are treated with care and concern with great respect like a member of the family. We will continue our protest until ban on Kambala is withdrawn."

Actor Naveen D Padil said, "We will show our unity in protecting Kambala and fight for justice. Before raising voice against Tulunadu tradition, PETA should first show concern towards street dogs which die every now and then. Our voice should reach till the union government."

Director Vijay Kumar Kodialbail said, "Jallikattu and Kambala cannot be compared, till date there is no case reported of people dying in Kambala. It is a wrong notion that buffaloes are subjected to harrasment during the race."

All-College Students' Association lawyer Dinaker Shetty said, "Kambala is part of Tulunadu culture and tradition. The government should get the ban on Kambala revoked. The union government should take concrete steps in resolving the matter. People in the district are closely attached to Kambala as buffaloes are treated with care and concern like their own family members. All of us should support Kambala. We will keep up our fight."

Student of Canara College Preethi said, "It is harsh that Kambala which is a tradition and culture of Tulunadu, has been banned. We need to unite until justice is provided. We will never give up our traditions. Kambala is being practised from the time of our ancestors and carried from generation to generation with respect."

I have been watching Kambla from my childhood. I was always wondering why they beat the buffaloes so hard. Anyways I am against Jallikattu, Kambla and even halaal type of butchering.

While holding constitutional positions like MP and MLA, Bava and Nalin, should not prompt public agitation to bring a constitutional amendment or to reverse a supreme court decision. I wouldn't have appreciated even if they resign from their posts and protest. Because as educated civilians, we can always put a strong case with valid points in front of the Supreme Court.

I just fail to understand how the people of this district who are considered educated and intelligent can allow themselves to be led by these selfish politicians. I wonder where all these people had disappeared when their duty was to support the anit Yettinahole project. They were conspicuous by their absence - Yettinahole is a project that is going to drive the people clamour for water - and now they are in full strength supporting Kambala. I am not against Kambala but had the students and the people shown at least 50% of their zeal, things would have been different. The Dakshina Kannada politicians did not support the anti Yettinahole project, in fact they were against those who were against the project. Now the same politicians are acting as though they are concerned about Kambala. And our educated people are supporting them. Of what use is our education if we are unable to distinguish between what is good and what is bad for us.

Brainwashed!!! ,starting from Guru to Students, totally blinded towards animal cruelty. Its pathetic to see students without realising the agenda behind these agitations which only benefit some political parties . Only good for students who look for reasons to bunk classes and appease their Masters, not their Parents..very very sad indeed...

There are plenty of Kannadigas from Udupi and Kundapura as well as from other places in Karnataka fighting to save this Tulunadu tradition. We all need to be in this together, whether it is Kambala, Mahadayi or Kaveri, and needless to say, the Yettinahole project, which should end.

This is a matter given undue importance due to vested interest and politics. There are so many important issues which are neglected and no one raises their protest. Our country is suffering because of such mentality of its citizens. Grow up people grow up. Thank you and God bless each and every one of us.

Gents, Please don't try to justify just because its part of our culture and we enjoy it. Its definitely cruelty towards the buffalos there shouldn't be any doubt in it, however, we live in a world where buffalo meat is used for break fast to dinner and on that ground Kambala could be very well justified. It says the law implementing body and the system were weak and the public had to spend time in correcting their mistakes. Perhaps they haven't thought about how to regulate and on a politically mixed up thoughts and force they had to ban it! such a poor state of affairs! The sad part will be tomorrow every one will go to the ground to justify there own silly culture to correct the system and it could be a disaster soon in a cast, religion and language based society without any doubt!

When the same animals handled by haajabba and hasnabba for trading purpose in 2005 they were peraded nakedly by the sanghi elements where nobody shown any concern as human chain protest ect including the film personalities or artists of coastal districts. For entertainment purpose see how the voice getting stronger. If jallikattu or kambala suppoters can revolt agaist supreme court openion then why not others speak in favour of their personal law opposing the court openion which also the present govt trying to interfere .FOR THE REAL HUMAN CONCERN THIS IS THE TEST CASE
