Neighbour's parcel lands 25-year-old youth in Dubai jail

Hyderabad, Jan 28 (Deccan Chronicle): A youngster, aged 25, was arrested from Dubai airport as soon as he landed in the city, last October. Habeeb Mohammed, of Chandrayangutta, was flying to Dubai for the first time through an Emirates flight.

He was successful in getting a job as an assistant clerk at a transport firm.

However, officials in Dubai claim to have arrested him on charges of carrying drugs. Habeeb’s family has denied the claim and insist that he is innocent.

His brother, Abdul Qadeer said: "The parcel which my brother was carrying was given to him by our neighbour. The neighbour told him that the box had medicines and a cousin will pick it from Dubai airport. But after Habeeb’s arrest, the neighbour is absconding. The man who was supposed to pick up the parcel is also missing."

According to officials, Habeeb has been imprisoned by Dubai law enforcement. "He simply took the medicines given by our neighbour because he, and us, trusted them. But nobody is coming forward to save my brother," Qadeer said.

He added, "The airport authorities who detained him say that the medicines which he was carrying with him were illegal medicines and those specific drugs had been banned in their country. But my brother was unaware of the medicines or that particular rule. We also filed a police complaint but we are not getting proper response from the authorities over at Dubai."

Prakash Reddy, the inspector at Chandrayan-gutta says: "We have received the complaint but we are helpless as we are unable to contact the investigating agencies in Dubai. The agencies in Dubai should pronounce Habeeb as an innocent and release him. But we will try our best to support the family in whatever ways we can."

"Police here should investigate the matter seriously and identify the real culprit. Once they catch hold of the real culprit, they must convey the details of the arrest to Dubai authorities. Only then will Habeeb’s innocence be established. He will be then released by the Emirates’ police," an official said.

Always follow the 2 golden rules when you are travelling to any foreign destination. 1) Make sure you pack your own bag and 2) Never, ever accept a package from anyone however close they are , and in case you have to, make sure you open it in front of the person and verify the contents and check online if what you are carrying is legal or not. If in doubt, just say sorry. Its better to say sorry then than be sorry later.
If the youth is being honest I am sure they will find the neighbour soon, though it may take time to get him released, but truth will prevail eventually.

In the process he lost his job also and sufferd a lot. this man who is going to Gulf for the first time should not have carried that parcel. Poor man since he is in Jail he will lose the job also. His future is destroyed now.

Best way to tackle this kind of phenomenon that keep your neighbour in your house as guest till their parcel is delivered at right person at abroad. We know this is little too much but not costly when compare to incident like this

There should be new law making it illegal to carry parcels that are not belongs to the traveler. Exceptions can be made if the non-traveler fills out a prescribed form giving all the details and circumstances for sending the parcel.

If u want to take parcel kindly ensure that it does not contain any banned substance. Proving innocence will be extremely difficult unless the real culprit is caught. Family should contact our kind hearted external affairs minister for help.

Recently i have read a news in a website that a nigerian woman was caught with marijuana. She too gave a similar answer this Habeeb gave . But the Dubai police could arrest the person who came to pick her up. Finally they found out that the woman was also a member of the team!

Habeeb could have asked at least the prescription. You can not take banned drugs to any country, but it can always save you in these type of cases.

As per rule 1) any medicine for self too, should have prescription by registered doctor. However some medicine prescribed by regd doctors in the traveller's country may be banned in the country where travelled. so it is illegal.2) self medicine, in excess quantity with prescription also not permitted. Can be confiscated. 3) medicine without prescription and not for personal use, can be confiscated. Dear all please adhare of the rules of the country where u r intended to travel and respect to the rules and regulations of the country. I don't want government to interfere in this matter, The guy in the picture looks educated, he should have verified the parcel before carrying it to gulf country.

Drug trafficking is a menace and these people carry out this mission in the entire world and blame others once they are caught..

He should not have carried such medicines at the first place. However, I assume that it's not drug like Ganja, Charas, opium, marijuana etc., Those are the medicines banned by the Government of UAE. Thus making those medicines illegal to import.
Poppy seeds (kaskas) we use in our dishes is considered as drug in UAE.
