Manmohan backed Mallya, says expose

Begged only for help: liquor baron

New Delhi, Jan 29 (DHNS): Fresh claims have emerged about liquor baron Vijay Mallya receiving undue favours from the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government. According to a Network18 report, Mallya disclosed to his staff he was seeking help from Manmohan Singh, the then prime minister, and P Chidambaram, the then finance minister, to run Kingfisher Airlines. DH could not independently verify the claims.

In an email dated June 10, 2010, Mallya purportedly told his senior staff he had asked his chief financial officer to put together whatever money he could for the airline to get by till money came from the PMO or the finance minister’s office. Another letter, which Network18 says it has accessed, suggests Mallya wrote to Singh in October 2011, thanking him for facilitating a meeting where he could explain the problems faced by his airline. Kingfisher Airlines is now defunct.

Mallya’s letter says the company had approached a consortium of banks for additional funds. He said he been asked to approach the prime minister’s principal secretary, who is said to have spoken to the people concerned. Mallya on Saturday took to Twitter to say he ‘begged’ for help and not for money. Caught in a controversy over unpaid loans. he left India last March and now lives in the United Kingdom.

Recently, the CBI filed a charge sheet in connection with unpaid loans and arrested nine people. IDBI Bank was among the institutions that bent rules to give him loans, according to the CBI. Mallya tweeted he had sought policy changes, which were not forthcoming. “I begged for help. Not for loans, but policy changes — declared goods status for fuel, flat rate of state sales tax instead of ad valorem, FDI etc,” he said.

In a series of tweets, he questioned how ‘public funds’ were given to Air India. “KFA collapsed with oil at $ 140 per barrel and state sales tax on top rupee devaluation. No FDI engine failures. Economic depression. Need more?” he asked in a tweet. In another tweet, he said, “And KFA being the largest domestic airline was the worst hit. Government bailed out Air India, but did not bail out KFA. So much for favours.”

The then UPA government had in April 2014 announced a Rs 30,000-crore bailout package to the loss-making state-run Air India till 2020 by way of capital infusion, hiving off its engineering services and ground handling business.

Incidentally, Kingfisher grounded its services across the country in October 2012 after the civil aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) suspended its flying licence.

The flamboyant 61-year-old Mallya, however, is reported to be in Britain in exile since he left India on March 2, 2016 after the consortium moved the Debt Recovery Tribunal in February 2016 to expedite the hearing on its recovery petition.

The Tribunal on January 19 this year ordered attachment and recovery of Mallya's properties for defaulting on bank loans by Kingfisher.

Allowing a joint petition filed in June 2013 by a consortium of 17 banks led by the State Bank of India (SBI), the Tribunal's Bengaluru bench said properties of Mallya and Kingfisher worth Rs 6,203 crore ($909 million) be recovered from them with 11.5 per cent interest per annum since July 26, 2013 over unpaid loans.

Asserting that not one rupee was misused, the KFA chairman said he and his holding (United Breweries) group had invested Rs 4,500 crore in the grounded airline and two of his group companies settled dues just before the airline sought fresh loan from IDBI Ltd.

"I was interrogated by the CBI and submitted documentary evidence," noted Mallya.

Admitting that he was humble enough to say sorry to employees and all stakeholders every day, the tycoon said he really wished the government helped him as his airline sadly failed purely due to economic and policy situations.

"I was not allowed to even downsize KFA due employment and connectivity. If my lifestyle was lavish it was for two decades before KFA was even born. My core alcohol businesses were severely controlled by the government," added Mallya.

Accusing the media, especially some English news channels, of distorting facts for sensationalism, Mallya told them to do due diligence and asked why CBI was not saying what UB had invested in KFA.

"Before slamming me on TimesNow, CNN News18 and NDTV, ask CBI and SEBI some tough questions on what proof or evidence they have to allege fraud," dared Mallya.

Advising the news channels not to get carried away with one-sided allegations, Mallya told them to ask tough questions (to the concerned authorities) to justify their allegations.

"TV anchors in India have become vociferous public prosecutors influencing public opinion. I only hope that our esteemed judiciary rises above," reiterated Mallya.

Defending Mallya, Biocon Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw re-tweeted that most entrepreneurs were in denial when it came to business failures.

"KFA should have shut shop much earlier and Mallya would have avoided this mess," tweeted the Bengaluru-based Shaw and a long-time friend of the mogul.

"I will never defend fraud but a genuine business failure should be settled fairly. If Mallya is guilty of fraud he must pay up," asserted Shaw.

On Mallya and Kingfisher defaulting bank loans, Shaw retorted that there was nothing wrong in what he (Mallya) did in seeking help from (then) Prime Minister (Manmohan Singh) and (then) Finance Minister (P. Chidambaram).

"Didn't the Big Banks seek a bailout from the US Government in 2008? Nothing wrong in what he did in seeking help from PM & FM," re-tweeted Shaw, adding "any large business across the world seeks government help when in distress".

Shaw also cited auto major Chrysler in the US seeking government's help for its revival.

"Totally wrong interpretation. Don't mislead public with such captions. Big businesses always seek government help in reviving business world over. Example Chrysler in the US," pointed out Shaw.

Shaw, however, did not side with Mallya on not paying salaries to the airline's employees.

"This is one point on which I don't side him. Employees come first and he (Mallya) was wrong in not paying their dues," added Shaw.

STRONG OBJECTION TO THESE UN-SUBSTANTIATED AND LIMITED TRUTH STORIES, PLANTED BY BJP IN MEDIA.

Kingfisher was not been a defaulter wayback in 2011 and had connected all the Indian airports from small cities. This was actually lauded by all. Dr. MMS and Chidu had tried to improve the connectivity and help the aviation industry. It is their job as PM and FM. Further more, Mallya not even a congress MP or MLA for congress.

He became defaulter later and it was very clear that Modi govt., helped him to flee the country exactly like Lalit Modi. This is even when the airport staff had stopped him to flee.

..MMS grand mismanagement as PM during UPA era..Mallya was one of India's best entrepreneur..its people like him who created thousands of jobs, they pay heavy corporate tax, Income tax..politicians also milk them regularly..He started KFA when market was not in favor, he didnt asked for bail out instead requested to ease norms so that he can find foreign investor..may be he failed to give demanded commission to ministers..Govt policy doomed KFA not Mallya..How can we forget that when loss making MCF was near to closing door and thousands of workers feared of lay off, the same Mallya took the loss making MCF risking his capital..Govt didnt helped to save MCF,its Mallya who saved MCF...He could have revived Brahmavara Sugar mill, he was very keen..once again same corrupt politicians failed him thereby ruining sugarcane growers future..we are jealous if some one wears neat cloths, spends his hard earned money for lavish living..but we are happy with people wearing torn kurtha infront of public but secretly travel in private jets celebrating each & every occasion foreign land..

Mallya issue is blown beyong proportions by vested interedts for obvious reasons. Our industialists and psu banks being used by unscrupulous poloticians/parties from time to time like prostitutes. During their bad times stooge politicians who were earlier benifitted start blaming like Mallya is now. Nobody remembers or acknowledges their immense contribution to the national economy development /production of goods, provinding of employment to youths. Good and bad times for entreprenuers/industroalists etc., is like cycle and part and partial of threir life. It is not proper to witchunt them in their difficult days. Mallya wa ready to repay the sbi's debt by maximum but he was forbidden to do so and his passport too was impounded.... This should not be the policy...

MMS and Chidu both are kind hearted, helped Mallya by way of influencing banks to lend him whatever the amount he wants, when the truth started coming out, asking for the proof. Congis have helped him in packing all his luggage before fleeing from the country.

    Mahendra Shetty,

Are you not saying that MMS & Chiddu were involved in Mallya's fleeing the country with a dozen of suitcases full of goods too ? Are you not saying that MMS & Chiddu gave Mallya an opportunity to leave the country ?

Take a note from Sahara Chief languishing in jail, gentleman, ! Suboroto Roy could have fled the country but he was jailed in March 2014 - good he was, else he would have been the first to flee, Mallya second !

See the difference - Mallya (whom BJP let pass through royally) cheated the nation of 9,000 Crores, but Congress put Roy in prison for Rs. 600 crores ! Don't behave like a cat drinking milk with eyes shut assuming nobody watches !
