Udupi, Feb 18: A quarrel between a fruit vendor and a customer took a serious turn at Uchil town here on Monday February 18 when police resorted to lathi charge without the permission of higher authorities.

A certain Kiran has been injured in the caning incident and former MLA Lalaji Mendon also sustained injuries, sources informed.

A fruit vendor and a customer belonging to separate religion quarrelled on Monday morning in connection to a banner row at Uchil town. Later, both were taken to the police station.

Soon after this incident, a big mob gathered at the incident spot and Lalaji Mendon rushed to the spot to convince them to calm down and not to get violent.

Meanwhile, a certain Rafiq, constable of Padubidri police station, clicked the photo of Lalaji Mendon in his mobile camera at which Mendon and the mob raised objection. Finally, the police used canes to disperse the mob and the situation turned violent.

Shops remained closed in Uchil town following this incident. DYSP Girish rushed to the spot later and assured the mob of taking action against the culprits. The crowd demanded the suspension of police constable Rafiq.

Thanks for the photos and article. Most of the intercommunity fights start from silly things. Religious Scholars should preach their community to avoid such hatred among inter religion and live with harmony.

All citizens of India have the right of speech and can act without hurting others. In my opinion Mr. Rafiq has freedom to click photo. The culprit mob should be taken into task for creating havoC and tense situation for silly reasons. Now a days, small matters of less importance are blown higher to achieve political gains. These political culprits should be dealt and compressed with iron rod.
