Udupi, Feb 8: "Love is universal and a natural phenomenon. But here in India, we have to acquire permission before getting into a relationship. Love over here is confined only to our siblings," said Ramon Magsaysay awardee Bezwada Wilson after inaugurating the annual communication fest ‘Article 19’ at Manipal University.
The annual communication fest ‘Article 19’ has been organized by the School of Communication (SOC), Manipal University.
Bezwada Wilson further said, "Men and women are questioned if they are together. They have to prove their relationship. This is a huge problem in the country. We should be bold enough to say that it is our country. We are part of a free country.
"This country follows a particular Constitution and is not run by an individual. People can follow their own culture and religions. One cannot force one's ideologies on others. Article 21 of The Constitution of India speaks about protection of life and personal liberty. That means no person shall be deprived of his life or personal liberty except according to procedure established by law," he said.
"About 41 percent of the children's population in India cannot afford two meals a day. We have to demand for the right of food for everybody and people should eat food of their choice. No one can direct us on what should be eaten and what not.
"The right to freedom in Article 19 guarantees the freedom of speech and expression, but untouchability still exists here in some of the Indian villages. Untouchability is a threat to unity in India," he concluded.
The teaching and non-teaching staff of SOC were present during the fest.
