Mangaluru, Feb 10: A huge fast-unto-death protest was launched here on Friday February 10 against the controversial Yettinahole project. Leaders from all sections across communites joined the protest, organised by Netravati Samrakshana Samyukta Samiti.

The police department had not given permission for the fast-unto-death, and had permitted protest only until 2 pm. However, the protestors stayed their ground even after the deadline. The police then intervened and took them, including Nalin Kumar Kateel and other leaders, into custody before releasing them later.

The protestors also raised slogans against the police for interuppting the agitation.

Earlier in the day, the hunger strike began with Muslim Central Commitee president Masood garlanding the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Town Hall here. Thereafter, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel led a protest march to DC's office, where a meet was held.

Addressing the protestors, Moodbidri Math's Sri Charukeerthi Bhattaraka Swamiji said, "Despite knowing that this project was technically wrong, the government has gone ahead to implement it. Due to the implementation of the project, Dakshina Kannada is severely impacted. I strongly appeal chief minister Siddaramaiah to revoke this project. We extend our full-fledged support and we will unite by keeping politics and religion aside and fight for the justice. Our voice should reach Delhi."

Sri Rajashekarananda Swamiji of Gurpur Vajradehi Math said, "The CM has became a mute spectator with regard to Yettinahole project. Because of lack of rain, Mangaluru and Bantwal are facing drought and are badly affected. This project will have severe impact on the people. The authorities concerned have recieved kickbacks and this should be completely stopped."

Sri Esha Vittaldas Swamiji of Kemar Math said, "It is tragic that the government has failed to listen to the cries of the people. We are seeking justice on the issue, and we will unite and protest for the sake of justice."

Odiyoor Sri Gurudevananda Swamiji said, "We are not against providing water to Kolar, but at the same time we need to look into the consequences of the project. All swamijis will extend their support in this struggle for justice. It is the duty of every citizen to support and protest against Yettinahole project. People need to be aware about the problems and join hands in this struggle."

Nalin Kumar Kateel, zilla panchayat president Meenakshi Shanthigodu, Ganesh Rao, Satyajith Suratkal, Krishna J Palemar, Yogish Bhat, Harikrishna Bantwal, Shashi Raj Kolambe, Monappa Bhandary and others were present.

Dear Ricky, I have been writing articles on this for long, unfortunately, Tulu nadu people under estimate themselves. 1) Tulu and Tamil are the original south Indian languages ( Dravida languages) rest all ( kannad, Telugu and malyalam) have come after that. 2) As you rightly claimed, Tulu Nadu was far more advanced than backward karnatak ( backward in thinking) in the times of independence.3) During the time of independence these backward kannada ekikarna samithi fooled some of the Tulu Nadu leaders and made us kannadigas ( I am ashamed). 4) We are ruled by these people and they always make policies in favour of them. Kannadigas suffer from inferiority complex visa-vis tamilians. All the literature and films are copied from Tamil and telugu and we people from Tulu Nadu admire at their language. 5) Association with Kannadigas in the last 70 years of independence took us 1000 years backwards. 6) Look at the Govt jobs - Visit any Govt office in Tulu Nadu, majority of the jobs are taken by them. How many of us get govt jobs?? 7) As such Tulu Nadu people have never been linguistic fanatics. We have Tulu, Konkani and Byari language and we are open to english and many other languages. Look at the Kannadigas; they are linguistic fanatics and are intolerant towards other languages. In Bangalore, Mysore etc Konkani people are not even allowed to perform Mass in Konkani. 8)Remember it is our mistake, blunder and sin. Our weakness is being misused by Kannadigas. Tulu Nadu people must realise this. 9 ) How long will we keep fighting against the injustice meted against our land and people; there was endosalfan tragedy, many power projects are shifted to Tulu Nadu. Remember These are the same Kannadigas who claim, " even if we shed blood, we will not give a singe drop of water to Tamilians. Don't you feel these people are just backward and we do not deserve to be with them? ( pls note this not to hurt anyone but enormous injustice has been caused to Tulunadu our neighbors.

The MP instead of protesting should do something good for the District. See to the Railway Station (Central) Road from the town hall side. This road is in such a state that it is a disgrace for Mangalore. The road belongs to the railways and the railways is a part of the Central Government (BJP) and our MP being from the BJP party it should not be difficult for him to set the road. Can imagine Mangalore becoming a "SMART CITY".

I am confused....Is this fast unto death protest by all those present or just an ordinary protest? If fast unto death then are these religious leaders who are present, represent their own opinion or the opinion of the religion and religious institution they belong to? Are all of them aware of the positives as well as the harm the Yettinahole project has (Scientifical)? If not, then it's only a gimmick...

The best, correct and only solution for all the problems faced by Tulu Nad is to create a separate state. Karnatak is indulging in discrimination when it comes to Tulu Nadu. Why cannot we fight for Tulu Nad state and stop once and for all the injustice emitted by kannadigas to Tulu region?

    Jai TuluNadu

    I agree with you Frank.
Even before Bangalore emerging Mangalore had created own Industry in all sectors, be it is media (Udayavani, Mungaru etc), soft drinks (now attacked by Pepsi & Coke), Hotel, Transport-Pvt Bus, Hospital, Education and many more. Without Government help, the city has been developed and youth have been developed.
Now due to stupid Karnataka Govt. we are loosing:
    1. Netravati River, where even Kannada actors supporting Banaglore- Kolar.
    2. We are in the verge of loosing transport sector (pvt Bus) now, where money go out of Mangalore for the development of Bangalore- Mysore, by introducing Govt buses here. (Hence we should not entertain Govt Buses and we loose our local entrepreneurship and jobs for locales)
    3. Our majority of young population migrating to Bangalore. Believe it or not we are loosing our talent, economy. It is major Threat to Tulu Language, Because I have seen many families settled started adopting Bangalore slang Kannada over Tulu even at home. At Mumbai families speaks Tulu.
(Hence If we get Tulu state ownership, we can attract IT , Bt and Manufacturing companies and retain our young talents, so that money circulates here, people get more Buz opportunity, hence larger economy).
    3. Karnatak High court Banned Kambala this time. Big shame on this state. Now State govt drama producing ridnance just to retain us in their state. And these actor crocodile tears to make name out of it, just by copying TN state spirit of protest. Where did they go when court banned?

We should make our Tulunadu state separate then we can attract more projects and we retain and we control young crowd migrating out for job purpose. We can save Netravati , our culture (Kambala), and moreover now high time to save our young crowd migrating and hence our Tulunadu economy and business. Politicians focus only on Mysore- Bangalore, Then when our place will develop?

I am not against providing drinking water to the people of the state in Kolar, other parts of the State. This is the money spindling project. Believe me, once the project gets started, they will not only use the water for drinking purposes but agriculture and industrial use by lifting the water from other rivers. and these politicians will sell us/ and deprive us our legitimate rights.
They hardly respect the sentiments of Tulu Nadu people. Our Arrogant Rulers at Bangalore and our local MLAs and MPS should be shown the exit door in next Election. We need separate Coastal Karnataka State. Why we should be at the mercy of the present Rulers of Bangalore? JAI HIND. Jai Tulu Nadu. Jai Coastal Karnataka State.

When you people appreciate Moilys contribution to Mangalore city ! Moily has not represent Mangalore in Parliament, Ask Nalin to do something. Nalin is rightly represented people like you (DK) in parliament. He never ask any serious question in parliament, bcz he doesn't know English or Hindi.
