Karwar: College students wear shawls to protest against burqas

Daijiworld Media Network - Karwar (SP)

Karwar, Feb 14: Several students of the government first grade college at Kumta in the district registered their protest against wearing of burqas by girl students of the college, by attending the college with saffron shawls draped over their shoulders on Monday February 13.

The students pointed out that Muslim girl students happen to be the lone exception to the rule relating to wearing of uniforms. They said these girl students violate the dress code and wear burqas and accused the management and staff of the college of owning discreet silence over this issue. They wanted to know whether the college management and staff will have the same attitude if the students wear dhotis around their waists with shawl over the shoulders, which is their traditional dress. They stated that they have conformed to the dress code but have also worn saffron shawl as they like it.

The students questioned as to how the management can question them about the saffron shawls if the Muslim girls are allowed to wear burqas. "We have repeatedly drawn the attention of the college management about this violation, but no steps have been taken. So, as a measure of warning, we wore saffron shawls. If burqas are not banned in the college in the coming days, the fight against this violation will be intensified," they said.

Cant they make their children explain that they are spending the money that they saved are for education and not for wasting time protesting for the dress that they wear.. are these girls wearing indecent or obscene dress to college that these boys have to protest... these boys are ruining there future... I feel sorry for these young boys.. fighting for the dress that they wear.. Hindu girls wear bindi and come, while muslim girls wear burqa.. both are having there own religious outfit.. why are these guys interfering and spoiling there college life.

I find these boys are making problems where not needed.when girls wear burquas, how come it effects boys?Afterall they wear a full body attire ,a type uniform.for boys it matters little whether they wear burquas or uniform.they should concentrate on studies, nothing else.It is a matter to be solved by authorities. All these years they wore burqas and nobody felt it was disturbing any studys.when boys wear shawls ,it is again a symbol of certain political sign.Burqua is not a political sign, but their daily attire.I am sure they wear uniform and cover burqua when they travel or?somehow boys should not protest with shawl but concentrate only on studys,.which is important to their life, not burquas. These girls are not for fashion show which you may think.

I feel I am very lucky to complete my education before this type of stupids could invade our college.
We had an awesome school / college days with friends, we never discriminated each other on religious basis. We ate Diwali/Christmas sweets, my friends ate sweets we gave on Eid.
This is nothing but spoiling their own future for stupid organisation.

Though I am not for burqa, wearing saffron shawl to counter burqa is nothing but trying to create disturbance in the school arena and divide the students on religious ground. The students are misguided by hardcore organizations. What do they want to achieve? What is their goal in life? The future of the students is in their own hand. Once they complete their education, these guys will not come to help them in their struggle to have a better future.
I remember how we spent our college days without such disturbances. There was absolutely no division based on religion. I feel this has become a thing of the past.
Having said this, I advise Muslim students to try wearing other decent costumes such as salwar-khameez and veil, which fully covers them. The Quran does not impose burqa on women but does advocate dress code that show modesty of women.

Wear Pious clothes(to cover themselves) , they have a problem.
Go ahead and wear lungi or even chaddi, how long will you do it ?
My humble request to students, Please do not listen to those who are trying to divide you.
This is heading nowhere. Focus on studies and get a better future, Unlike those who are asking you all to do this.
Think about your family and your future.

When you are in the college, everybody wants you for their own selfish end. Once you finish your college, nobody will care for you. Might be, you have to knock the door for jobs, to those, whom you have opposed, during your college days.

Activism in India has touched its worst. Political and religious leaders should leave the students alone. Students also need not get into these disputes. Schools and colleges should introduce strict uniform. It should be a matter of discipline. Uniform creates an environment of equality. There should be no difference between rich and poor hindu muslim or christian. I am disappointed with the readers who add fuel by trying to justify burkhas and shawls etc. I would have thought that all readers come up with one voice and allow students to concerntrate on their goals. It is time for them to amass knowledge. The comments herein are further raising the pitch of division amongs people. I do not understand why all of us have to take our religion so seriously. Please be religious but practice it privately. This message is not directed at a particular community but all communities.

This hateful mongering of students wearing shawl in protest of muslim girls wearing thier niqab, is disgraceful and hateful. They need to be heavily penalised.

As for the girls, they need not wear complete abhaya, a simple head scarf is dignified enough.

“Saffron shawl as a sign of warning”..
This purely reflects the environment they have grown up in.
Wear dhoti’s or suit boot or anything but before that look into your family album and confirm if your grandparents or Great grandparents wore it.
These saffron demons stir a lot of dirt in the society. Parents send them to school and colleges to behave properly like human but even there they behave like rowdies.
Simple thing to do is Ban them from education field for once. Let them make a carrier out of orange lungi and shawls.

People are tired advising that religion is at its best in Church, Temple, Mosque, Gurudwara, etc. In school, you are students (vidyaarthi), not a representative of your religion. The day you will leave your religion at home and go to school, you will be a successful citizen.
