Suicide attempt averted on Kolkata Metro

Kolkata, Feb 19 (IANS): A day after a woman took her life by jumping in front of a Metro train along with her child, a man allegedly tried to commit suicide by doing the same on Sunday but was rescued, an official said.

"A man jumped on the metro track at Girish Park Metro station at around 10.45 a.m., while a Kabi Subhas (New Garia region) station-bound train was entering the platform. As a result, the metro service had to be stopped on emergency basis," a Kolkata Metro Railway spokesperson said.

The official said, the alertness of the driver saved the youth from getting run over and he was eventually rescued from beneath the rake.

"Thanks to the alertness of the driver, the fatality could be averted. The man was taken out by our rescue team and immediately shifted to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. He was slightly injured," the official said.

The Metro service was partially affected for over an hour due to the incident.

"The metro service was halted between Dumdum and Maidan metro station. However, the trains were plying between Maidan and Kabi Subhas station on both directions. The full service resumed at 11.50 a.m.," the officer added.
