Puttur,Feb 26: Two persons, accused of murdering a couple from Undila in Kodimbala in the taluk nearly five years ago, were given life term imprisonments by the fifth additional district and sessions court here, through a judgement passed on Saturday February 25. The two accused were charged with murdering Baby Thomas and his wife, Mary Thomas from Undila in a barbaric manner.
Muhammed Rafiq alias Rafiq from Somwarpet taluk in Kodagu district and Muhammed Kamaluddin alias Saidu, resident of Nuriyalu in Uruvalu village in Beltangady village have been jailed for life for the above crime. The two had posed as strangers, told Baby Thomas couple that their motor bike had developed problems near their house, and sought a lift to a destination about 1.5 km away. When they were being taken by Thomas late night on September 25 2012 in his car to help them, the duo had stabbed him to death. They had then returned to the couple's house and murdered Mary Thomas by slicing her throat. Thereafter, they had stolen valuables and decamped from the scene.

The court had pronounced them guilty on February 22 and came out with the quantum of punishment on Saturday. In addition to jail term, they have also been imposed with fine for crimes under different sections of Indian Penal Code. Failure to pay fine will make them liable for stayng inside the jail for different additional terms as mentioned in the verdict.
