Mangaluru: Mescom says electricity tariff hike unavoidable

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Feb 28: Managing director of Mangalore Electricity Supply Co Ltd (Mescom), Chikkananjappa, said that hiking of electrical tariff is imminent as the company has to spend large funds for purchase of power and improve the quality of its power distribution network to stand up to the expectations of its consumers.

He was speaking at the public meeting held at the office of the deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district here to discuss the power hike proposals mooted by electricity supply companies, which are under the consideration of Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC), on Monday February 27.

"There has been considerable increase in the quantum of power being purchased at high cost, and also expenditure. Inflation, hiring of staff etc have also contributed to the increased maintenance cost. We have an outstanding payment of about Rs 700 crore. Therefore, we have placed a request with KERC for hiking the electrical tariff by Rs 1.48 per unit," he stated.

Objecting to the proposal, B V Poojary from Udupi requested KERC to permit minimum increase because of drought conditions prevailing here. Satyanarayana Udupa, also from Udupi, objected to the proposal and suggested to Mescom to improve its working and make good the loss. He said that Mescom cites cost of new works each time it comes up with proposal for tariff hike, but it does not spend even 60 percent of the amount mentioned. He therefore found no reason for increasing cost of power. Many others came up with suggestions and requests for various facilities.

President of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Jeevan Saldanha, Srinivs Kamath, B A Nazeer, Ramakrishna Sharma Udupi, Sooryanarayana of MSEZ, A G Pai of JBF and others also came forth with their suggestions and grievances.

Chairman of KERC, M K Shankaralinge Gowda, said that the commission will consider those suggestions which are found to be worthy. He said that the commission will soon prescribe fines for not responding to consumer complaints in a time-bound manner. He stated that distribution of about 2,000 mw solar power that would be generated has been posing a problem. He said that the power tariff hike, if permitted, will come into affect from April 1 this year.

If half the population of the city is stealing power by tapping from power lines this will remain a problem. MESCOM has to identify, detect and punish these offenders. It could be small roadside shops, eateries, homes whoever.

Without using air-conditioners, practical use of water geysers -electricity bills are over Rs 2000 every month. MESCOM tariffs are higher than what we pay even in Mumbai.

MESCOM- Please try to look for COST SAVING and EXPENSE MANAGEMENT opportunities and not just keep loading the consumers with price hikes.

IT IS LARGELY DUE TO RICH AND CARELESSLY USED BY FEW PEOPLE. IN OUR BUILDING 3 FLATS HAVE 4 SPLIT UNIT AIR CONDITIONERS AT LEAST ONE OR TWO ARE NON STOP RUNNING, WHERE AS WE COULD NOT AFFORD TO BUY ONE A.C. WHY PUNISHMENT FOR EVERY ONE ALONG WITH THEM. INCREASE TARIFF THOSE WHO ARE USING ABOVE LIMIT AND NOT FOR POOR WHO HARDLY SPEND LESS THAN RUPEES ONE THOUSAND PER MONTH FOR ELECTRICITY. ABOVE MENTIONED PEOPLE PAY RUPEES 3000 TO 3500 EVEN DURING THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER, DECEMBER. PLEASE DO JUSTICE WHILE INCREASING NOT ONLY FOR ELECTRICITY EVEN TAXES

While it is important that we conserve electricity and water, we should also let go of our Indian habit of pulling down our neighbor who can afford a little extra amenity. Perhaps they have worked hard to install the air-conditioner. Moreover, we are in the 21st century and air-conditioners are no longer luxury items.

JUST BY READING MY COMMENT, YOU GOT A SHOCK OF PAYING MORE FOR ELECTRICITY AND TALKING BIG ABOUT INDIANS CULTURE. TO EARN MORE ONE DOESN'T NEED TO WORK HARD AND THOSE WHO HAVE WORKED HARD THEY SPEND AS PER NEED. THOSE WHO INHERITATED FROM ANCESTORS OR LOOTED ONLY SPEND LAVISHLY. WE ALL ARE IN 21st CENTURY.

All state governments have to learn how AAP government is working for common people of Delhi without electricity /water tariff hike . In fact they reduced the earlier tariff for electricity & water .Earlier people used to waste these natural resources and after AAP government tariff policy people started using them efficiently. Due to this there was surplus water & electricity. AAP government wanted to lower the bus fares also and wanted to increase the public transport buses with a dedicated lane for them so that people can make maximum use of public transport. With this road jams and pollution could have been reduced. However this plan was not approved by the central for reasons which they may only know.
