Bengaluru, Mar 2: A young lady from Ideal Homes extension in Rajajrajeshwari Nagara area in the city committed suicide on Tuesday February 28. It is learnt that she was overtaken by emotions of shame and shattering of her future dreams after the boy who she was engaged to marry, all of a sudden refused to marry her.

Nagalaxmi (32), a postgraduate in business administration, who was employed in a private concern in the city, was the unfortunate victim of this incident. Nagalaxmi was staying with her parents, who run a store dealing in footwear, at Rajarajeshwari Nagara. Nagalaxmi hanged herself in her bedroom when no one was around at around 7 pm on Tuesday, said police personnel of Rajarajeshwari Nagara station.

Karthik, a software engineer who was working in Ireland, and Nagalaxmi had got to know each other through a matrimonial website. They knew each other since the last two years through this site. The two had shared their cellphone numbers, and had decided to enter marital relationship. For the purpose of marriage, Karthik had opted to come back to India and had recently joined for work at Hyderabad.

Both had informed their parents about their relationship, and obtained their concurrence. An engagement ceremony was held and the two had decided to marry a little while later. Kathik's father, who was not keeping well, had breathed his last a few days after the engagement ceremony. Therefore, the two families had mutually agreed to put off the marriage ceremony by one year, and fixed the date of marriage as May 22 this year. Nagalaxmi's family had booked marriage hall and made other arrangements for the marriage.

Nagalaxmi was in for a shock when she suddenly received a WhatsApp message from Karthik ten days back in which he said he had decided to snap the relationship. After Nagalaxmi conveyed this information to her parents, both the families talked to each other and tried to persuade Karthik to change his decision. Karthik, it is learnt, remained adamant. Nagalaxmi had repeatedly requested Karthik to come over to the city for talks but he had refused. Efforts of her parents to talk to him failed as he avoided them, it is gathered.

Due to these unexpected developments, Nagalaxmi went into depression mode. She often revealed to her parents about her overwhelming feeling that the honour of the family had been compromised because of her and that she finds it hard to live on. Her parents had advised her to forget the past and concentrate on her professional life.

Minutes before ending her life, Nagalaxmi sent an e-mail to her father expressing a feeling of helplessness at her inability to convince her friends and relatives about the cancellation of her marriage. "I have taken a harsh decision. I know it will disappoint you. Please pardon me for this," she said in her e-mail.

It is said that Karthik and his family members were demanding unduly high amount of dowry. Police personnel said that based on a complaint filed by Devanand, father of Nagalaxmi, Karthik's mother, Geetha, has been arrested on the allegation of abetment to suicide.

Some reports said that Katik believed that his father died after the engagement ceremony due to some defect in the horoscope of Nagalaxmi. Because of his notion, he had also served a legal notice to Nagalaxmi, it is said.
