Delhi assembly proceedings delayed by traffic jams

New Delhi, March 7 (IANS): The second day of the Delhi assembly Budget session was delayed by 10 minutes as Speaker Ram Niwas Goel was stuck in a traffic jam.

"I had to call my OSD (Officer on Special Duty) twice to get the traffic cleared. I was stuck for around one and a half hours," Goel said while speaking on the issue raised by BJP lawmaker Jagdish Pradhan under Special Mention motion.

Slamming the Delhi Traffic Police who come under the administrative control of the central government, Goel said that he saw no traffic personnel while commuting from Seelampur to the Delhi assembly compelx.

Pradhan, the Bharatiya Janata Party legislator from Mustafabad, said traffic jams were a regular affair in the national capital.

He said it took him over two hours to reach the assembly and at one point he thought he would not be able to make it on time.

Delhi's traffic congestion was raised by other legislators as well, including Tilak Nagar's Jarnail Singh and Wazirpur (north) legislator Rajesh Gupta.

While Jarnail Singh urged the Speaker to direct the government to look into the redesigning of roads to solve people's traffic woes, Gupta said encroachments were responsible for obstruction of traffic.
