Sushma helps Indian woman ill-treated by in-laws in Pakistan

New Delhi/Hyderabad, Mar 21 (IANS): Following a father's YouTube SOS that his daughter was being mistreated by her in-laws in Pakistan, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Monday said the Indian High Commission had met the victim and was ensuring her safety and return to India.

Sushma Swaraj tweeted that she received a YouTube message from Mohammad Akbar that his daughter Mohammadia Begum, an Indian national, was married to a person in Pakistan "and was being ill-treated by her in-laws".

"Our mission sent a Note Verbale requesting the safety, security and well-being of Mohammadia Begum," she said.

"Our High Commission officials met Mohammadia Begum and she expressed her desire to return to India."

As the Hyderabad woman's passport had expired last year, Sushma asked the Indian High Commission to renew her Indian passport and facilitate her return to India.

Meanwhile, Mohammedi Begum (the name on her passport) spoke to her mother Hajara Begum over phone and informed that her husband Muhammad Younis beat her up and locked her in a room after Indian High Commission officials met her.

The 44-year-old broke down while narrating the ill-treatment at the hands of her husband and in-laws. The mother advised her to have patience and wait for the help from the High Commission.

Hajara Begum said Younis had been abusing her daughter. "He even tells the children to keep themselves away from her as she is a Hindustani and all Hindustanis are Hindus."

Younis has even threatened that he will not allow her go back to India alive. He reportedly married another woman, a Pakistani.

Hajara Begum said her daughter had turned very weak due to physical and mental torture and needs immediate medical help.

Mohammedi Begum and Younis have five children -- three sons and two daughters. The youngest son is nine-year-old and he was born in Pakistan while the other children were born in Muscat, Oman.

"If the children come with her that will be good but my appeal is that she should be brought home immediately," said Hajara Begum.

It was on March 16 that Sushma had sought a report from India High Commissioner Gautam Bambawale.

Mohammedi Begum's father Mohammed Akbar, a cycle mechanic, had earlier sent an e-mail to Sushma Swaraj in January seeking her help in bringing back his daughter.

He alleged that Muhammad Younis, who concealed his actual nationality and claimed to be from Oman, married her in 1996.

The 'nikah' was performed over telephone through some agent and Begum joined Younis, a mechanic, in Muscat. After 12 years of marriage, Begum got a shock when Younis, who had lost his job, disclosed that he was a Pakistani.

Mohammedi Begum had visited Hyderabad in 2012. Her father said this was her only visit to India in 21 years.

I have met many muslims in India who think marrying their daughters to an Arab is a privilege. We the people of the Indus are the best. Arabs think lowly of us. They were basically camel riders before the oil boom and will go back to their camels soon. They are no comparison to the intellect of the Indus people.

"Islam is the second largest religion in India, with 14.2% of the country's population or roughly 172 million people" - courtesy Internet

I wonder, this was not enough for her parents(may be for Saina's parents as well). Why send your daughters to Pakistan, when you can get a best match within India??

I know, now many hate mongers will copy paste these lines from the articles:(let me do it myself to save your time)
"Begum got a shock when Younis, who had lost his job, disclosed that he was a Pakistani."

My first question is that, why don't you do a complete background verification before the marriage?
& can you be 100% sure if you perform 'nikah' over telephone through some agent valid??

I can still remember even Mr Shoiab Mallik had to face some issues related to 'nikah' (to Aiyesha) over telephone

    This is my personal opinion.

Very true. I follow Sushma Swaraj on twitter for the same reason. I even doubt if she's from BJP since she totally follows a different view with that of BJP. I am actually very proud of what she's been doing. We always say that we are the one's who Vote them and they forget us once they are elected. She's different. A Minister who is always there for the people. Best SOS reply, better handling, powerful, humble and good sense of humor too.
Best one was about 2 clerics held by Pakistan, she handled quite efficiently, we all felt they would be trapped. Pakistan knows it can't mess with India since India has a wide support from maximum Countries, besides India is way ahead and very powerful than Pakistan in terms of everything.
Now I agree people do say there where Ministers before too who have helped Expats and that they don't publicize their work. True!
But here I don't mind even if she publicize because the world needs to know that India can take care of HERSELF(INDIA) independently.
Even if we assume these are highlighted for publicity, one needs to ask how come no other good works(Various Departments) aren't publicized or highlighted? Answer is simple - Nothing is done that great yet, to publicize.

Poor woman was informed he was an Omani. She was cheated by the Paki who as usual are gaddars. As for girls ill treated by in-laws in India, it is the duty of the Home Minister of the states to ensure that justice is done to the victims.

Mr. vinayak prabhu, mangalore. Fr. Tom is a Indian citizen and Indian govt has approved his visa so its Mrs. Sushma ji s responsibility to get him back. I know she is very good at it. (big fan of her).

Visa is issued by Yemen not India - get your facts right.
Not sure if Fr Tom wen there before or after the conflict started. He could have returned back during the mass evacuation done at the start of the war.
In this case Indian government is at huge disadvantage, Yemen is a war zone and there are no diplomatic contacts there.
