Udupi: Robbing of wholesale jeweller - ninth accused in police net

Udupi, Mar 31: The only person remaining to be arrested in connection with the abduction of a wholesale jeweller and robbing him of the gold ornaments and cash worth over Rs 40 lac in his possession, was taken into custody by the district police from Uchchila bus stand on Thursday May 30. Asif (32), named as ninth accused in the case, was arrested in this instance.

Asif, native of K S Rao Nagar in Mulky Karnadu village, currently lives near Goddess Mahalaxmi temple in Uchchila Bada village. Asif and eight others face the charges of forcing a wholesale jeweller named Dileep from Thrissur, Kerala, to alight from the bus in which he was travelling towards Udupi on the night of March 17, and abducting him in a car. Dileep was then reportedly robbed of cash and gold ornaments before being dropped off near Padubidri before the robbers fled. The police had succeeded in executing a plan to nab eight of the culprits.      

Some of the cash and ornaments robbed by the gang have already been confiscated from their possession. A sum of Rs 4,000 in possession of Asif was seized. The accused and cash have been handed over to Hiriyadka police station.

District crime intelligence bureau inspector, Sampat Kumar, and other staff reportedly took part in the said operation.
