Mangaluru: Airport officials are passenger-friendly, no case of harassment - Director

Mangaluru, Apr 1: In the wake of allegations of harassment at Mangalore International Airport in a section of the media, airport director J T Radhakrishna on Saturday April 1 said that no complaint of harassment had been received from any passenger, and asserted that the officials and personnel at the airport are passenger-friendly.

Dismissing the allegations, Radhakrishna said, "It has come to our notice that some baseless rumours are being spread about airport officials and staffs, alleging that they have been displaying harsh behaviour. No incident of ill-treatment of any passenger has happened in the airport. Our staff and officials always try to maintain passenger-friendly attitude. Majority of the passengers who travel through our airport are satisfied with our service.

"Only in some exceptional cases, due to security reasons, we ask passengers for clarification, and once they give satisfactory answers, we allow them to travel. In such situations too, we get open-minded response from passengers.

"We have not got any complaint from passengers regarding harassment or harsh behaviour. If one or two isolated cases have happened, it does not mean the entire system is at fault," Radhakrishna said.

"Daily, around 1,000 passengers depart from Mangaluru airport to Gulf countries, and a similar number of passengers arrive. We are handling around 3,000 domestic passengers. We rank 12th in India in terms of passenger traffic and we the 18th major airport in the country. Last year, around 7 lac passengers travelled through our airport to various destinations.

"Various development works like expansion of the parking lot are under progress. Rs 130 crore has been sanctioned for expansion of the terminal building," he added.

Announcing the new e-visa facility at the airport, he said, "Today (April 1), we are staring e-visa services. The electronic mode will provide visas to travellers within 48 hours. For e-visa users, we have set up separate counters inside the airport. Those holding e-business, e-medical and e-tourist visas can make use of this facility."

Answering a question on the upcoming Kannur international airport, he said, "Kannur airport is not a threat to our service. Passengers always prefer the nearest point to travel. Our passengers are from Mangaluru and some parts of Kasargod. So we will not lose our passengers."

He also informed that from May 1 of this year, Indigo airlines will start its domestic service from Mangluru airport. The company has planned three daily flights - two to Bengaluru and one to Mumbai, he said.

There is quite a large amount of feedback from Daijiworld readers and none of it is positive. Trust the airport director J T Radhakrishna has seen this response to this interview and will try and take some steps to improve the image of the Mangalore airport.

This bureaucratic/ lackadaisical approach will not be in the interest of the passengers and the proper working of the airport.

Mangaluru Airport Officials are not passenger friendly they are just money friendly. Pay them and they are friendly. If you don't pay them they will make you pay for some reason which is not valid for mentioned any where in legislation. Who has to suffer because of this its only passenger and in some cases the airlines staff. Is there a way we can take this up with any higher authority who can action on this (on one since every one is corrupted).

    Mr. Radha Krishna,

Don't comment like a politician since you are holding a respective position in a international airport you must visit time of flights arrival and departure schedule. What ever occurred during the past period all are not a rumor or a blame game.

Your immediate attention and sincere action is very important than waiting to happen some thing on your own family.

Most important thing to change in Mangalore Airport is the SECURITY STAFF. Kindly please replace the staff with some well mannered/well trained Staff. The way they are doing their duty is really pathetic. Looks like they are not trained properly to talk to passengers rather looks like they are interrogating a petty thief. Disgusting.

Sir, you must be talking in your dreams. If you do not know the facts, pls don't give an interview.
We are the ones who have gone thru harassment in the hands of your unprofessional staff. They treat you like thief. You get tensed when you land at Mangalore airport as you know you will be humiliated once at the customs though you may not have anything to declare. The officers talk, look and approach is disgusting. So before doing other things, first improve customer relations, make the airport customer friendly. Mumbai airport officials are very friendly; you feel nice to land in such an airport; pls observe their approach and give training to your staff first. when I see so many negative comments, I wonder from where go collected these facts on friendly airport. Good luck. Awaiting your future interviews.

Mangalore International Airport ground staff and management handles the day-to-day affairs by not being passengers friendly just because it’s the monopoly of having only one airline operating international flights from this airport which is quite evident with their unprofessional and arrogant manners with which they handle International passengers and that too a family’s with children.

    Dear Sir,

Don't see complaints & act. This is not right way.
Please reach out to passengers directly and find out whether they are happy travelling through Mangalore Airport.
Keep a electronic counter for customer's satisfactory rating ,
This is how customers opinions are understood.

    Dear Director,
Please check baggage delivery time in Mangalore & other International Airport. In Mangalore it takes more than 75 Minutes and other Major International airports like Mumbai takes less than 60 Minutes.
How many baggage belts are available in this airport & how many are put to use.

Hope you act without waiting for complaints.

Can you please clarify what is the definition of harassment according to you ?. If you want to find the harassments we face, you will have to conduct random quality of your so-called officers. Also, can you tell when was the last time you came out of your office and checked the performance of your officers.
Being a Mangalorean, I must confess our airport is not up to the International Standards.

A small state like Kerala is building its 4th international airport. Why can't Mangalore build a new bigger airport at ground level (instead of hillside). The new airport can be built on reclaimed land near the water (like Hong Kong) and feature bigger and multiple runways and terminals with more counters, screening machines and lounge facilities. Once built the current Bajpe airport can be dedicated for cargo or even handed over to the Indian Airforce.

If we start building now, hopefully we can have a new airport operational in 3 years.

It's not the nearest airport which the people select, but the best closest airport with lots of flights and good connections. People avoid travelling through airports where there are less flights to International destinations. What is the point in travelling from an airport with less connections, if the passenger needs to wait long hours in one more airport in India like Mumbai or Bangalore to get the connecting flight. It's better to travel by road to the airport with more connections rather than waiting long hours in one more airport. Now that most of the tickets are non-refundable, it means loss of money if we wait at the airport and if the flight is cancelled or delayed. So it's better to travel by road and reach Bangalore where there are more connections.

My question to the passengers travelling from Mangalore. Have you ever seen any staff from airport authorities helping any passenger? You have to go pillar to post to find some one. Ofcourse, you will find some airlines staff standing in group and chatting. They never go to the passengers to help, even they see some eldery passenger need help, unless you go to them.

The behavior of Airport staff's I agree, they are the most arrogant people I have seen. Not everybody but most of them are. Not just Mangalore, this is what I have seen in many Airports in India as well as abroad. Maybe they have strict rules like you cant smile, go help those who are in need of. Blaming everyone would be a grave mistake and de-moralizing the ones who were there to help sincerely.

Mangalore airport Director statement is coincide with ' fools day'.
Sir, I have travelled across the world. But never seen outgoing passenger bound for resident after the x-ray screening is pat checked. This is the only airport passenger need to wait more than one hour just for baggage even with one landing at a time from International sector.

Have you ever heard duty for used clothes? This is the statement of Mangalore airport custom officer.

In my experience Mangalore airport is only good for Gold. One star for customer service. Zero for customs. Airport services half star. Over all experience pathetic.

    Dear Sir,
If you want Mangalore Airport to attract more passengers then please follow up and give urgent attention to these following points.
    1. Extend the runway so that bigger aircraft's can land and also so that it has a large stop-way area. Pilots are human beings and there is always chance for error so having a lengthier stop-way will prevent an accident in case of errors.
    2. Promote all types of public and private transport from the airport. Some people who lost their lands must have been running taxis at the airport. Compensation to people who lost their land and maintaining standard of the airport should never be mixed together.
    3. Give proper training to all the airport staff to be customer friendly and try continuously to reduce the wait time at the airport after landing.
    4. Also look for more connections to countries other than the gulf. Having more direct connections leads to more tourism opportunities. Now that e-visa facility has been introduced it is better to communicate with major international airlines like Emirates, Etihad, Qatar so that Mangalore Airport has more connections to western countries and countries in the east.

Out of your 7 lakh customers that used M'lore airport in 2016 ,I was one among them. When u classify telling your system as good I felt to let you know how worst can one experience in the immigration where they asked me the qualification certificate, my marriage certificate, my work experience certificate when I had just to join my family . Excuse me I did not come for a job at the airport !! They kept questioning at the immigration as if I was into criminal activity . I told them if I could see the manager when the guy who was having the conversation with me told I can't meet . I was already getting delayed with my flight and since I had to transit two airports they kept questioning why such a ticket is booked . (The ticket is booked by the my spouse company ) when I told them it's not booked by me , they kept telling you can't give such an answer . The officer sitting there asking such irrelevant questions and in such a high tone of voice in the counter creating such a scene and making me stand out of the line there . If this is supposed to be the good system according to you , I'm sorry whatever rank you are the level of customer satisfaction from my view point is absolute negative 👎🏻 score .
