Mangaluru: PFI protests alleged harassment - Police resort to lathi charge, arrest activists

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK/SP)

Mangaluru, Apr 4: Demanding that a youth who allegedly suffered atrocities at the hands of police should be provided with relief and justice and that the case of atrocities committed against him should be properly investigated by competent officers, a large number of Popular Front of India (PFI) activities mobbed the office of the city police commissioner on the morning of Tuesday April 4.

The police personnel resorted to caning the crowd to disperse them. They also took several of the protesters into custody.

Police sources said that the protestors pelted stones at the police commissioner's office and at the cops, injuring at least seven personnel including inspector Beliappa, ACP Uday Nayak and ACP Shruthi. Police commissioner reportedly said that the cops used force only after the protestors attacked them.

Sources said that the protest was held without permission.

Parents of the youth, identified as Ahmed Qureshi from Katipalla Kaikamba, claim that their son has been a victim of police excesses. They have been saying that the police illegally arrested Qureshi and then tortured him in confinement. After he developed complication due to the torture, the police have admitted Qureshi into the district Wenlock Hospital here. They said that the doctors have told them that one of his kidneys has not been functional.

The protesters demanded for the immediate discharge of Qureshi and to hold investigation into the entire incident leading to his torture, towards doing justice to him, adding that he is innocent.

In a press note, the PFI accused city crime branch (CCB) police of illegally arresting Qureshi in the name of investigation and thrashing him in an inhuman way. They demanded for the immediate suspension of CCB inspector, Sunil Naik, and sub-inspector, Shyam Sundar, and others. The PFI further sought admission of Qureshi, whose condition is said to be critical, into a private hospital for advanced care, and urged disbursal of suitable compensation to the victim as he has suffered physical disability. He warned to intensify protest if the demands are not met within three days.

"Ahmed Qureshi, who works as painting worker, is a person full of altruism and social service qualities. He was arrested from near the district courts complex on March 21 by the police on the guise of questioning. He was kept in illegal confinement from March 21 and 27, during which period he was tortured, resulting in bodily deformity. He has now been admitted into Wenlock Hospital, but family members of Qureshi have not been given information of arrest. When search warrant was filed in the court, the police did not show any respect for it. They threatened the family members who sought information about him," PFI stated, adding that Qureshi had confided about having been given electric shocks and that only after the family brought pressure was he projected as an accused in a murder attempt case and produced before a judge on March 27, after which he was ordered to be sent to judicial custody.

Over a hundred activists who created ruckus at the venue were taken into custody and taken to Urwa police station. Some of them were injured in police caning.

The readers supporting police action, please watch the video again and show me a single incident of stone pelting, or any stones lying around . Only what you can see is footwear ( chappals ) of protesters. Prior to comment, please try to understand the facts and figures, and remove the spectacles of hatred you are wearing towards minority. Who knows, tomorrow same thing may happen to you.
    Do not support the oppression.
Whether these protesters pelted stone or not, can be investigated easily nowadays through videos, shot by PRESS and public. If not proved, then public have every right to sue the police force.

If the protesters have pelted stones, I will support the police action whoever they are , whichever community or party they belong to.. I justify the police action.
I do not comment keeping in mind which community is targeted, for me all Indians are equal, the only difference is peaceful people and problem creators. I am with peaceful people whoever they are, whichever party or community they belong to, and I oppose all wrong doers irrespective of community cast and creed.

So kindly use you ability to collect some facts before commenting, coz now a days it has become an habit on commenting just looking at the headlines. There are so many pictures and videos circulating on whats-app where you can see the way they were protesting and unmoved although they were hit by police personnel in barbaric way. There's no chance they can pelt stones at police office or personnel. So do not get fooled by the police report, as they are good in fabricating the facts as per their gain.

Do they think they are in Kashmir to pelt stone at police? First let them learn to respect democracy then only they can protest for their rights in the democratic ways. At last police have taken good decision. All 100 should be sent to non bailable custody. It is all the result of present Congress Govt's wrong decisions. only 8-10 months left for playing against administrative machinery n the state. they will be taught lesson how to behave like U.P Govt has taken steps. where majority Muslims now no way but to keep quite doing better jobs for there livelihood.

Demanding for justice through peaceful and lawful manner is good,
But having a group and making strike needs appropriate permission.

Pelting stone means these protesters inspired by some anti-national spirits.

The Real face of Peace Lovers Alias Peace Breakers!!
As of my view the activists belong to Muslim community..
Recently Muslims injured physically the Life Gaurd in Thaneerbhavi damaging the Toursim spot.. Innocent Life gaurd had informed these people swimming in the bad waves of that beach and those muslims spoke rudely stating dey are experts in Swimming!! And even when they lost a person swimming they unecessarily destory certain boards and also the Library of Tree park!!
Now they have injured Belliyappa sir and Shruthi mam including Uday sir in all three officers i have seen patience at Service who manages all the Protests just by communication..!!!
You PFI Activists kindly change your fake name to this Peace Breakers of India(PBI) which reveals your agenda in every activities of your organisation.... Today i Realise RSS,BJP nor ABVP follow the Constitutional Methods of Condemning any issue and never throw stones on Personnals who are at Public Service... Shame on Peace Breakers of India!! I wonder if police can show same method to disperse BD, HJV kind of protest! Do they always take police permission including ABVP? Students union should never be allowed to come on the street! Anything they need should be done within the institution premise and memorandum copy should be sent to concerned authority! It is habit of students Union to have few outings and picnic on roads each year to stay away from (few students only) boring classes, pity is they drag other serious students along those do not want future problems and comply!
