Abu Dhabi, Mar 14: A fireman was run over and killed by a speeding driver as he made his way to put out a blaze, it was revealed yesterday.

Mohammad Hussain, 48, was rushing to deal with a fire at an accident between a car and a small bus on Tuesday when the incident occurred.

He was preparing the hose to douse the flames, which had set the car alight, when he was mowed down by the reckless motorist.

“He put warning signals out on the road. The motorist was driving at high speeds and hit the fireman who died when he reached hospital,” said Major Faisal Issa from Abu Dhabi Police.

The motorist is being held in police custody.
