Air India revokes flight ban on Sena MP Gaikwad

New Delhi, Apr 7 (PTI): Air India today revoked its flight ban on Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad with immediate effect, two weeks after he had assaulted an airline staffer onboard a plane.

An airline spokesperson said the move follows a written order from the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The spokesperson said, "AI is committed to ensuring its employees are not assaulted or misbehaved with. We will take strong action to preserve dignity of our employees."

Aviation sources said that with the AI revoking the ban, private airlines may follow suit. The 56-year-old Osmanabad MP had yesterday written a letter to Minister for Civil Aviation Ashok Gajapathi Raju expressing his "regrets" over the "unfortunate incident" on March 23.

"I write to convey my regrets for the unfortunate incident that took place on 23rd March, 2017 in the Air India Flight No. AI-852 seat No.1F," Gaikwad had said in the letter.

The ban was lifted by Air India, hours after it thwarted an attempt by Gaikwad to book a ticket for the seventh time in the last two weeks. However, the MP, in a statement denied having made any attempt to book a flight.

An airline head on the condition of anonymity said it has been agreed that police investigation will continue and the MP will give a commitment that he will show acceptable behaviour in the future.

Gaikwad had assaulted an Air India employee and had boastfully claimed on national TV about having hit him with slippers 25 times. He was banned by the airline on March 24.

He, however, yesterday played the victim card, claiming he had only retaliated when provoked. The MP, who had attended the Lok Sabha for the first time yesterday since the incident, had denied any "wrongdoing" on his part and instead accused Air India officials of misbehaving with him, and sought action against them, especially the airline's CMD.

He struck a somewhat conciliatory note when he tendered an apology to Parliament but insisted he owed no apology to the airline officials.

In his letter to the civil aviation minister, the MP had stopped short of tendering an apology to either the national carrier or the staffer concerned.

A combative Shiv Sena had yesterday threatened to disrupt AI operations in Mumbai and Pune and forced repeated adjournment of the Lok Sabha over the issue.

The party had also declared it would not attend the April 10 meeting of the NDA if the ban was not lifted.

The common man of the country is let down by our Police, Legal System, Speaker of the Parliament and the PM. Shame on our corrupt, power hungry, inefficient system as a whole.

What would have been the reaction of our police, legal system and parliamentarians if the AI employee has hit the MP the same way ?

May be we need people like Rodrigo Duterte the Philippine President in India.

This BJP government has licked the boots of the Shiv Sena to remain in power. The Modi government should have shown some self respect. Totally disappointing.

It is extremely sad to note that this ruffian will be allowed to fly once again. It is as clear as daylight that the BJP government did not have the courage to take on the Shiv Sena. This was a very good opportunity for this government to show that it really means business. The whole country was with the government and it was just the Shiv Sena which was against them. This BJP has hopelessly let the people of this country down. In one stroke, they have demoralised the morale of the Air India staff. The staff were really looking up to this government to show its true character but by pressurising the Air India management to allow this rowdy to fly again, they have shown that they are not interested in the welfare of the country, they are only interested in retaining power. This was a golden chance for the government to boost the morale of the Air India staff which was rallying behind its intrepid MD Ashwani. Now the staff will have no interest left and it will be back to square one. This government has proved that it is no different from any other. I am totally disappointed with the way the government has handled the entire thing. Disgusting. This BJP government has let all Indians down.

There is no doubt that AI came under pressure from the central govt. and lifted the ban against gaikwad. The case will go on for years, he will fly in the airline which he chooses to, and will be elected by the people of the same constituency and sent to parliament again.

This is how the indian democracy works. At the end of the day we have to blame the people as people vote on the basis of religion , caste etc and send the representatives like gaikwad to the parliament again.

Is Maharaja of Air India is finally bowed to the threat of Shiv sena which threatened the airlines will not to allow to operate from Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji airport?

It is unfortunate that In India law of the land is finally "rest to peace" by this political elite affiliated to criminals.

If it is common man 'CISF' would have arrested the passenger and mainstream media would have already constructed some terror story.

Very sad news indeed! If anyone else were to perform the same wicked act like Gaikwad did, forget flying, they will definitely have ended up in Jail. This country is governed by wicked power hungry people who can't even give justice to a common citizen.

Look at the wordings. He never said sorry. He only said he regrets. So what was the big deal for Air India to make a big fuss to ban the MP only for a fortnight.? If it had and sense and if it really cares for its employees he should have been banned for life so that others take a lesson out of it. Now he did everything (including showers of chappl on the employee) and got away with it. Air India has become a joker in the process. May be many more will do face a ban for 15 days and then give a regret letter and get back. What a tragedy of this nation!
