Women won't have to change their names in passport after marriage: PM Modi

New Delhi, Apr 13 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced that women are free to retain their maiden names in their passports now after the marriage.

Stating that he wanted women to be at the centre of the developmental schemes, Modi said his government is working in different ways to empower them through various schemes like Mudra and Ujjwala, among others.

"From now onwards, women will not have to change their names in the passport after their marriage," Modi told a gathering of the Indian Merchants Chambers' ladies wing over a video conferencing.

The government wants the woman of the house to be the priority in all of its development schemes, he added.

Citing various women-oriented schemes launched by his government, the Prime Minister said the maternity leave for the women has been extended now to 26 weeks from the present 12 weeks while another scheme provides for transfer of Rs 6,000 to women, who chose to deliver in hospitals.

On the free cooking gas distribution project launched last year under the Ujjwala scheme, Modi said, "The government has set a target of covering as many as 5 crore people from BPL families over the next two years. Within a year of its launch, the scheme has already benefited 2 crore women."

Under the LPG subsidy surrender campaign, already 1.2 crore people have voluntarily given up their benefits, he added.

Praising women for their entrepreneurial spirit, Modi said wherever women are given an opportunity, they have proved that they are two steps ahead of the men.

The biggest contributors to the dairy and livestock sectors are women, he said.

Lijjat Papad and Amul are the shining examples of what our women can do if empowered, the prime minister pointed out.

Modi also said 70 per cent of the Mudra loans (aimed at small borrowers for productive purposes) borrowers are women now, which indicate the rising entrepreneurial spirit of the women.

Since India is catching up fast with Western countries in divorce rates, it is advisable for women to keep maiden names. It will be a hassle for changing the names multiple times. Modi is one step ahead of some of the bloggers.

What is new in this ?

Any married female is not supposed to change her maiden name kept by her parents. It is only the people with no or little knowledge or those who were told by the passport agents or family members abroad with half knowledge might have opted to change their names after marriage.

I checked with many of my female colleagues/ex classmates who said they still use their maiden names in passports. They are all well educated and most of them are from professional background.

You only need to mention your spouse name in passport. No one wants or wanted to change married females to change their maiden names.

Keep your personal identity kept by your beloved parents at least as a mark of respect for them.

If you are travelling to Middle East for a job, you have to necessarily put your husband's name in the passport to avoid possible problems in getting visa stamped, civil ID and employment formalities.
In Kuwait for example, they include either husband's name or father's name for men also compulsorily in your name whether you like it or not. They will issue employment visa and all other IDs in this way. If your passport does not have husband's name, you had it.
Even in Bombay for example, in all Government offices, they somehow add fathers name (for men and for spinsters ) and husband's name (for married ladies) even without your knowledge. The forms in Government offices or even in Private Institutions show First name, Fathers name and Surname. Catholics have to take care to see that they enter Second name in place of father's name as otherwise, their records get changed. Marathi people dont understand this logic of second name at all. South Indians have lot of problem in this.

    Anil Kumar, u have mistaken.
Modi said no need to change surname, he never said no need to put husband name.
it means she can retain her surname prior to marriage

    ex.
Anushka sharma before marriage no need to change to Akushka Kohli after marriage.
    she can use sharma surname
there is seperate column for husband name

Women do not need any hand outs or pittance. All they need is 50% reservation in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha as well as in all sectors of employment from IAS cadre to Jadu Mali. If this is done, then they will be able to introduce some schemes that will benefit for men!

I don't think it requires a PM's advice to continue or shed parental surname and adopt that of spouse and vice-versa. A man respecting his wife, addresses her with the first name, surname is irrelevant. However, the authorities st the airport have refused to regard me as a part of the family just because my spouse and children bear similar and I a different family name.

The PM must first ensure that the legal formalities are first modified, than asking people to follow modern practices.

As for empowerment of women, today's woman juggles between job and home because her husband's income is insufficient to run a household. The government must reduce cost of living, and levy less taxes than burdening common man year after year. Not boast about subsidies but at the same time celebrate how many people forfeited a subsidy. Why not make the product cheap in basic fare itself instead of raising it and garnishing it with subsidy ?

How the cooking gas distribution to women becomes free ?We the common people are being looted systematically since several months by way of various taxes surcharged that garnered lakhs of crores funds to govt treasury.no govt gives anything free.Anna Bhagya for somebody becomes kanna Bhagya for others.Free is only Padma Vibhushan award to great person like Sharad Pawar but sanctity of precious award eroded.
