Panaji, Apr 24 (PTI): Days after the AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh conceded the "mistake" of not having a pre-poll alliance with the Goa Forward Party, a senior Congress leader today demanded that the party's Goa unit president Luizinho Faleiro should be sacked from his post.
"Digvijaya Singhji's assertion that there was a deficit of trust between the Goa Forward Party's mentor Vijai Sardesai and the state leadership of the Congress is a polite way of saying that the state leadership was in sync with the BJP leadership," state Congress spokesman Trajano D'Mello alleged.
In a series of tweets, Digvijaya had admitted that not having the pre-poll alliance with the Goa Forward Party (GFP) was a mistake.
The GFP is now one of the alliance partners of the ruling BJP under chief minister Manohar Parrikar.
"In these circumstances, the state Congress president (Luizinho Faleiro) should step down, failing which he should be sacked. As long as he continues to head the state unit, it will be difficult for the Congress to come back to power in the state," D'Mello said.
He claimed that he had written to Faleiro on January 26 demanding to have an electoral understanding with the Goa Forward ahead of polls, held in February, and to extend the support to the three candidates fielded by the outfit.
Faleiro was unavailable for comments.
The Congress, which had emerged as the single largest party in the elections by winning 17 seats, failed to install its government in the coastal state as it could not muster the support of the regional parties.
However, the BJP, which finished second with 13 seats, cobbled up an alliance with the GFP and the Maharashtravadi Gomantak Party (MGP), each having three MLAs. The BJP also won the support of three Independents.
