Army chief hints at retaliation for soldiers' beheading by Pak

New Delhi, May 4 (PTI): The Indian Army does not reveal plans before executing them, Army Chief General Bipin Rawat said today, indicating possible retaliation to the Pakistan military beheading two Indian soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir.

Replying to a volley of questions on whether the army will respond to the barbaric act, Rawat, without giving a direct reply, said the armed forces will effectively respond to such actions by the neighbouring country.

"We do not talk about future plans beforehand. We share details after execution of the plan," Gen Rawat said, refusing to elaborate further.

Pressed further, he said "When this kind of action takes place, we also carry out retaliatory action". He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event.

Vice Chief of Army Staff Sarath Chand on Tuesday had said the army will respond to the dastardly act at "a time and place of its choosing".

Defence Minister Arun Jaitley had said the "sacrifice (of the two soldiers) will not go in vain" and the Indian armed forces will react "appropriately" to the "inhuman act" of the Pakistani troops.

Sources said the army is weighing various options to respond to the beheading of a Naib Subedar and a BSF head constable by a Pakistani Border Action Team on the Line of Control on May 1.

Asked about the reactivation of terror launchpads across the LoC which were destroyed by India during the surgical strike last year, Rawat only said the "counter-infiltration postures" have been beefed up.

"Terrorists are trying to infiltrate. Snows are melting, summer months have started. Like each year, infiltration will commence. We are taking measures. We have beefed up our counter-infiltration postures," said Gen Rawat.

On security forces launching a massive anti-militancy operation at multiple places in south Kashmir's Shopian district today, the army chief said it is being carried out to bring the situation under control.

"The combing operation is going on as some banks were looted and some policemen have been killed. It has been launched to ensure that the situation is brought under control. These operations are carried out regularly," he said.

    A rogue nation like Pakistan, which was 'born out of hatred', 'survives on hatred' & 'intends to thrive on hatred', whose contribution to the world's terror factory is well known and documented, needs to be confronted and tackled in a firm manner.

    Our brave and most accomplished Indian Army, if given sufficient powers to retaliate, is certainly capable of giving a fitting reply to the cunning, heartless, cruel yet cowardly, shameless Pakistani armed forces.

    To all top brand commenters ..... Present govt has given freehand to Army to retaliate the way they wish. Refrain from commenting if you don't have correct info. If Modi declares war, you will be the first to cry foul about ill effects of war, again blaming Modi. So please have some patience, let Army do it's work and give them time to frame a strategy. It's not a one night job to plan such strikes and they aren't going to inform u in advance, u arnt that special. If you fail to understand this, you are just criticizing govt for just the sake of criticizing. That will be pathetic.

    Still he is hinting and giving too much publicity in the media before doing anything? If it is any other country, it would have retaliated within next hour after beheading it's own soldiers. Spineless central govt and useless Prime Minister totally in competent and not capable to handle a rogue nation like Pakistan.

    Dear Abdul, So when soldiers were beheaded in MMS /Gandhi Congi regime, the retaliation was in half an hour? There was not even any condmenation. It was just forgotten after 2 days, Though i am not a supporter of BJP. I think the present scenario is any day better than that of the MMS /Gandhi regime. We never even had such discussion when soldiers were killed.

    @Vijay,
    Because Modi was saying he have 56" chest and he will teach the lesson to Pakistan if he become PM. Whenever attacks happened from Pak side during UPA regime, BJP leaders wanted to send bangles to Dr. MMS. Where is that aggressiveness, angry and courage when BJP is in power??? Why Modi too much scared to Pakistan? As a opposition we have all the rights to question the BJP govt and have to show them mirror. The number of attacks, casualities and ceasefire violation by Pak under 3 years of Modi regime is much higher than the 10 years UPA regime. Modi govt and his supporters must accept the failure.
