M'lore: Human Rights Commission Seeks Rs 5 Lac for Naxal Victim

Mangalore, Mar 29: The state human rights commission has sought a relief of Rs five lac for Venkatesh, who was killed by the Naxalites who mistook him for an informer of the police in Malnad region last year.

Seven-year-old Anudeep remembers with horror seeing his father being killed by the Naxalite at Gandagetta in Chikmagalur district on June 6, 2007. In spite of the pleas by his mother Madhura and he himself they killed his father right infront of his eyes.

Chairperson of state human rights commission S R Nayak said that the state government had announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 2 lac to the family. However, Madhura, the victim's wife fell sick and died at a hospital in Sringeri on March 5. Addressing the media persons Nayak informed that the commission has urged the government to pay an additional relief of Rs 5 lac to Anudeep. As per the a scheme of union government, the victims of Naxal violence are entitled for a monthly allowance of Rs 750. He also said that if this amount is not paid by the centre, the state government should pay it and later claim the amount form the centre.

The SHRC in its recent order on the issue urged the chief secretary to look after the educational expenses including the cost of the professional courses of Anudeep, said B Parthasarathy Member of the commission.
