Mangaluru, May 12: Mangaluru City Corporation mayor Kavitha Sanil on Friday May 12 informed that footpath and drainage works in 57 places across the city, at a cost of Rs 125 crore, would be started in a few days, and at the same time, work on developing traffic circles would also begin soon.

Addressing a press meet here, the mayor said, "We need to aquire land in a few places in order to construct drainage and foothpaths. So I request people to cooperate with the officials. Some people have agreed while others are still opposed to handing over their land for the purpose. Within 10 days, tenders will be invited for this project, so we need to clear the land issue at the earliest. Even circles in some places need to be developed, and this too may require lot of space. If people face any problem in this regard they are free to approach me to sort out the issue."

On the administration's preparedness for the upcoming monsoons, she said, "During rainy season it will be a nightmare for the people if large trees get uprooted, and houses might collapse due to storms. Hence, to deal with such situations, we have formed an emergency rescue team of 7-10 persons who will rush to help. If such situations arise, people can call helpline number 0824-2220306. Preparation work for the rainy season has already started, with works such as cleaning the stagnant drainage water under way."

Warning people against putting up flex boards and banners in the city, the mayor said, "Despite several warnings, people are still displaying flex boards and banners. MCC had conducted a drive for the removal of flexes and banners within its limits, but people are still continuing this practice without seeking MCC's permission. This will be the last warning, we will definitely take stringent action against those who display banners and flex boards."

Inspection

Kavita Sanil also conducted inspection of a waterlogged drainages near Bharat Mall at Lalbagh on Friday with regard to waterlogged drainages.

She conducted the inspection along with other officials to review the condition of the place. She also raided Surabhi complex where commercial complexes have their own barricaded parking lots and space is reserved for staff and customers. MCC officials removed the barricades of the parking lots. Sanil also inspected the condition behing Tribhuvan complex where garbage was dumped resulting in foul smell.

Speaking to the reporters she said, "From past several years drainage water is getting logged close to Bharat Mall which is resulting in foul smell. We have recieved lots of complaints in this regard, and I assure to deal with this at the earliest. Water is logged is such a way that it is diffcult to even ride the vehicles as water gets splashed on the commuters whenever the vehicle moves over it.

"Earlier I had given deadline to the owners of the (Surabhi) commercial complex for barricading the parking lot illegally and not allowing others to park their vehicles. We will issue notice to the Surabhi complex owner and also make sure the space behind Tribhuvan complex is cleaned at the earliest."
