Moderate quake shakes Delhi, Haryana


New Delhi, Jun 2 (IANS): A moderate intensity earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter Scale shook parts of the national capital and Haryana early on Friday. There were no reports of any loss of life or property.

The tremors lasted for nearly a minute around 4.25 a.m. and its effects were felt in Delhi and adjoining areas of the National Capital Region, the Met department said.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the epicentre of the quake was near Gohana town in Haryana, between Rohtak and Panipat cities at a depth of about 22 km.

Mohammad Usman, a resident of Preet Vihar in east Delhi, told IANS: "We were in a mosque offering prayers when we felt the tremors. Everyone immediately rushed out."

Akash Bhargava, an IT professional, also rushed out of his house after feeling the tremors. He alerted his neighbours, who too followed suit.

A second tremor of 3.2 magnitude was felt at 8.13 a.m. It also had its epicentre in Rohtak in Haryana at a depth of 10 km.
