Food habits of North Indians can't be imposed across country: Tarun Vijay

New Delhi, Jun 14 (PTI): Amid a row over the issue of cow slaughter and consumption of beef, Tarun Vijay, a former editor of an RSS-affiliated weekly, has said eating habits of North Indians cannot be imposed across the country.

In a write-up published in the 'Panchjanya', a pro-RSS journal, he also asked cow protection groups to read the likes of Swami Vivekananda and V D Savarkar to understand that the habits of people living in North India cannot be imposed across the country.

Vijay pitched for developmental issues to be put in the forefront of the public discourse, saying Prime Minister Narendra Modi was working on issues such as electricity, railway, highway construction and woman empowerment, while "we are trying to run all India according to our likes and dislikes".

Taking a dig at cow vigilantes, he said true dedication to cow is to ensure respect for the animal in public life and not to take law in one's hands to help resurrect a defeated opposition.

"The followers of Swami Vivekananda and Veer Savarkar who are making a hue and cry about cows, they should be made to understand that only North India and one big community cannot be considered as entire India.

"They should read Vivekananda and Veer Savarkar again. Just like Hindi is not the entire Hindustan and the unity of India is not possible without showing respect and affinity (atmiyata) towards the rest of Indian languages, how can the law in north India regarding food habits and attire be applied to the entire country?" the article reads.

The article comes in the wake of a raging debate on the issue of cow slaughter and attacks by certain fringe elements on those involved in alleged cow smuggling based on rumours.

"All those people who are involved in killing of cows, at their own level leave their cows unattended and also look towards the government for cow protection," it said.

I remember the words of Swami Vivekananda "A man cannot be a good Hindu if he does not eat Beef". "There was a time in India when without eating beef no Brahmin could remain a Brahmin" . I was surprised to read this in his book The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda.

Is India losing the plot of "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas" ?

Or was it only election rhetoric ?
Only time can tell. In any case, (broken) promises are not meant to last.

IT IS NEITHER THE QUESTION OF FOOD HABITS NOR ISSUE OF BAN ON COW SLAUGHTER.

THE REAL ISSUE BEHIND ALL THESE MESS IS COW THEFT. IT IS ALSO SEEN CONGRESS IS

SUPPORTING COW THEFT THEREBY UNAUTHORISED COW SLAUGHTER AND CRIMINALS IN

PARTICULAR MADE COMMON MAN TO REJECT SUCH A NATIONAL PARTY THERE BY BJP

TAKEN ITS ADVANTAGE. A NATIONAL PARTY SHOULD BEHAVE LIKE MATURED ONE.

POWER IS NOT PERMANENT ALL THE TIMES MAY BE IN CENTRE OR STATE. BUT THE

MATURED WAY THE PARTY PRINCIPLES ADOPT IS ITS ADDED ASSET LIKE "SUB KE SAATH

SUB KA VIKAAS" NO QUESTION OF MAJORITY/MINORITY DEVIDE FOR VOTE BANK.

Imagine that for a moment if possible.. LOL

Interesting to note that IS and RSS are weighed on the same scale.Any way who is UNDER RSS or who has given them contract for protection???For protecting our borders there are armed forces and for law and order there is Police and judiciary.Protection of culture is a big joke in this modern era.It is lndividual choice and not to be dictated by others...and often only middle and poor class are only lectured by culture protectors as to what to wear and whome to mingle with and marry with. These so called mata ,behen rakshak are spineless in front of rich class...

    Fully agree with Tarun Vijay.
At the same time he too should understand that in Mangalore, the protest is not against beef or eating beef. It is against cattle being stolen from the cowsheds by unemployed youth of one particular community.

You are proving that the cattle owners are cowards / sleeping, when their cattle are stolen from their sheds.... If that is your concern, deploy goons at the cow sheds and they will take full care of the thieves / sellers ... Instead of giving the right medicine, why are you snatching away the food habits of the poor ....
