Manipur rivers flow above danger mark after rains

Imphal, June 14 (IANS): All rivers in Manipur are flowing above the danger level following torrential rains in the state, with the Imphal river breaching the banks in Kairung village on Wednesday.

Many low-lying areas in Imphal city and nearby areas were inundated. Irrigation and Flood Control Minister L. Haokip toured the affected areas along with officials.

Some portions of the National Highway that links Nagaland and Manipur with Assam are also under flood waters. Trucks, buses and private cars have been told not to ply on the highway.

The situation has led to rising food prices, with traders claiming that no goods were coming from Assam.

Heavy rains have been forecast in Manipur for the next two days.
