SC notice to Centre on order banning cattle trade for slaughter

New Delhi, Jun 15 (PTI): The Supreme Court today sought response from the Centre on pleas challenging its controversial notification banning the sale and purchase of cattle at animal markets for slaughter.

A vacation bench comprising Justices R K Agrawal and S K Kaul issued notice to the Centre and asked it to file response within two weeks on two separate petitions challenging the notification.

The apex court fixed the matter for hearing on July 11.

Additional Solicitor General P S Narasimha, appearing for the Centre, told the bench that intention behind bringing the notification was to have a regulatory regime on cattle trade across the country.

He also told the apex court that the Madras High Court has recently granted interim stay on the notification.

One of the petitioners, who has approached the apex court challenging the notification, has claimed in his plea that the provisions in the notification were unconstitutional as they violated the fundamental rights including freedom of conscience and religion and right to livelihood.

The Centre had on May 26 banned the sale and purchase of cattle from animal markets for slaughter through an Environment Ministry notification -- 'Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2017' under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

..Peace lover, you have no information or wrong information..Article 48 of the Constitution of India mandates the state to prohibit the slaughter of cows and calves and other milch and draught cattle..SC in various cases upheld the constitutional validity of anti-cow slaughter laws enacted by different state governments in India(except few states)..as far as export is concerned, COW meat export is punishable by law, no one can export cow meat..only meats of Buffallo, Bulls etc can be exported..BEEF is collective word, not necessarily cow meat.

Nothing but double standards from the Centre and those who support them on the pretext of animal torture. (Keep your Cows for you but spare rest of the animals for others)
If they have any love, sympathi and hate cruelty to cattle, why these brig brains enjoy other meats. (chicken or foul, lamb, sheep etc.)???????

..if we read Kerala HC judgement, i dont think SC will stay this notification..HC clearly said there is no ban, no voilation and petitioner didnt read what notification says..its surprising to read one of the SC petitioner says central law unconstitutional & voilates 'freedom of conscience and religion'.!!..whose religion/conscience!,..whether he is supporting law considering Hindu religious sentiments or opposing!!..as i know, eating specific meat not considered as religious activity, but not eating specific meat (say cow meat, pork)considered religious act..then what SC petitioner really want to say!!..controversy is simple politics, there is no ban, its a guideline, streamlining of farming & slaughter animals as per SC guideline itself..

    Agreed !
Let Modi government BAN slaughter of cows completely, we all support respecting the sentiments of Hindus. But Government itself is not respecting the sentiments of Hindus, as export of beef is increasing day by day. In North Eastern states BJP leaders them self supporting the slaughtering of cows. Goa is ruled by BJP, and beef is freely available.
    This is nothing but hypocrisy

Sri, 10 rupees only. then it is a fact that after giving milk , you illtreat your cow lt it fend for itself , due to hunger make it eat plastic, garbage & other toxic stuff. Guys like you should be charged for cruelty to animals . My dog needs more attention & more care & i require more than 50 rupees for its daily expenses. the beef ban is made only to harress the minority
