Modi encourages Khadi gifts

New Delhi, Jun 25 (IANS): Encouraging the concept of gifting Khadi handkerchieves, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that Queen Elizabeth II has preserved the one presented to her by Mahatma Gandhi many decades ago.

In the 33rd edition of his monthly radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat', Modi recounted his 2015 visit to the UK and the first meeting with the Queen.

"Queen Elizabeth had invited me for lunch. Towards the end of our meeting, she gracefully showed me a handwoven Khadi handkerchief that was presented to her by Mahatma Gandhi on her wedding," the Prime Minister said.

He emphasised on the concept of gifting useful things like books and handkerchieves rather than flower posies.

"We should gift Khadi handkerchieves as it will help poor artisans, and books so that people are inspired to get into the habit of reading," he said.

"I would not reject if someone gifts me a bouquet but I feel that this issue should continue to be discussed," Modi added.
