Beltangady, Apr 18: The Shiradi Ghat section which is undergoing repair work from several months will be finally opened for traffic by May 30, sources said. The repair works are in the final stage and heavy vehicles will be allowed to ply as soon as the work gets over. Shiradi Ghat a link between port district Mangalore and rest of the districts has been in pathetic condition for the past few months.
The main obstacle has been solved by clearing the pending bills to the contractors. Out of the thirteen curves, nine have been repaired and on the rest of the curves only one side of the repair work is remaining, said an engineer of NH department.
Kotari Company has finished the asphalting work and Tamil Nadu-based Shree Durga Constructions Company is yet to finish works in 51 curves on the stretch between Sakleshpur to Hegadde road. The department has given clear instructions to finish the work before the commencement of mansoon.
Sources said vehicles which plied on the repaired road have damaged the roads and a case had been filed in this regard but it was dropped as the owner of the vehicles made an unconditional apology.
On other hand contractors are worried about the thieves who have been stealing the cement bags when construction workers are not on the site.
Dakshina Kannada police department had deployed personnel in Gundya region to check the unlawful movement of the heavy vehicles but they are deprived of electricity and telephone facilities to function well. It is said that a handful of personnel are having a tough time to check vehicles which ply in big numbers simultaneously.
A few days back miscreants demolished barriers which were constructed to avoid traffic movement and people opine that there is no logic in checking the vehicles which ply over 30 kilometers descending the Ghat from Sakleshpur.
