Vigilante violence backed by supposed enforcers of law: Sonia

New Delhi, Jul 2 (IANS): Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday hit out at the government, saying it was seeking to create an India completely at odds with the one that saw the light of Independence and added that "a culture of vigilante violence is actively being supported by those who are supposed to enforce the law".

She also said the idea of India had been thrown fundamentally into question by rising intolerance and malevolent forces who tell people "what they cannot eat, who they cannot love, what they cannot say".

Gandhi also said that "domestic misrule was as great a challenge for our country".

Launching the commemorative publication of National Herald, she further attacked the government, saying: "Though their language is modern, they seek to take India backward, to further their narrow sectarian vision."

"It is one of the ironies of our present times that the soaring reach of their (freedom fighters) work is now sought to be either obliterated or in some cases appropriated by individuals and groups who are in direct opposition to their beliefs and principles," she said.

"Those who stood aside when history was painfully made by sacrifice and struggle, those who had little faith in the Constitution adopted by our country, are now seeking to create an India completely at odds with the one that saw the light of Independence. Let us not forget that they made no sacrifices to shape India's destiny," she added.

Gandhi also said: "Their modern jargon conceals pre-modern beliefs, concepts that are at odds with progressive and inclusive thought, with contemporary knowledge and with a vision for the future. It is our duty to pull away the hypocrisy and reveal the reality lurking beneath."

"This is being encouraged by a culture of vigilante violence actively supported by those who are supposed to enforce the law. Such examples assault our consciousness almost daily," she added.

Gandhi also said: "India has reached a crossroads marked by increasing threats of authoritarianism and bigotry. Where we choose to stand today is where our country will head tomorrow.

"We are in a war of ideas. We wage this war to preserve our ideals, which have built India up as a model of democracy, diversity and co-existence. When these ideals are threatened, India itself is in danger. And if we do not raise our voices, if we do not speak up, our silence will be taken as consent," she said.

Gandhi said: "We have daunting enough battles to fight - against injustice, against poverty, against prejudice, against patriarchy, against malnutrition, against illiteracy, against communalism - but we must also prevail in this greater war for the soul of our nation."

"Ours is a mission to preserve the credibility and sanctity of our institutions in their democratic design. The domestic misrule is as great a challenge for our country.

"At a time when the inclusive conception of our nation is under attack, and the press is pressured or in some willing cases to obey and applaud rather than to question, speaking truth to power is the imperative of our age," Gandhi said.

"Let us work together to safeguard an India in which each person's voice can be raised and heard, most of all the voices of those who question and disagree," she added.

Vigilante violence is promoted by the ruling party and their H.O in Nagpur and Home Ministry's reluctance to clamp down on violence only makes it evident that the ruling party is covertly and overtly supporting this violence.

After being trashed to pulp in 2014. Loosing state after state in 2016-2017 . Now at last Mrs. Sonia woke up to read out a scripted speech. More such speeches would follow, once the almost 50 year old 'yuva neta' Rahul returns back from his 'vacation'.

    Yes,Mrs Sonia Gandhi's observations are right .

The recent Economist a conservative, business-friendly publication seen by world as being authoritative on the subject of the economy NOT quick to judgment and thus makes its view on Modi damaging.

The cover was a little unfair and too tough on Modi and on India, but is was factual with Modi riding a tiger made of paper and is headlined 'Modi's India: The illusion of reform'. Accusations are :

    1. Modi does not have the capacity to be a reformer.
    2. Modi is 'not so good at working systematically to sort out the underlying problems holding the economy back.'
    3. Instead, 'his reputation as a friend to business rests on his vigorous efforts to help firms out of fixes -- finding land for a particular factory, say, or expediting the construction of a power station.'
It says that the ideas that he is currently working with in the fourth year of his administration, such as the GST, are mostly the product of previous administrations and not his own.
4.The magazine concedes that Modi is energetic, but occupied by everything from manufacturing to toilet construction.'He is bold, but directionless.
5.DEMONitisation was 'brave,' but not 'sound policy' and 'a lack of planning and unclear objectives mean the exercise has damaged the economy'. Especially the Rural and Farmers are on the streets literally. EVERY Major sector has been hit.Even beggars have suffered.
6.The magazine fears 'more erratic decision-making as the government aims to prove it is "doing so
    "doing something".'
    7. Economy is currently growing at a slower pace than it was three years ago.
8.The advantages India had of low oil prices and a young population are being lost as 'Modi, in short, is squandering a golden opportunity.'
9.Going over the record, there are not many linings of silver in the dark cloud.
    10. Cow politics created havoc .

Yes Congress had scams but DEMONitization has overshadowed them.
Hope things will change for the better now on.

Zanny Beddoes, is not only an economist but also a shrewd businesswoman who knows what will sell her magazine. Though 'the economist sells most copies in US, from 2014, Modi has been in the cover for 5 times, four times in praise of him and once against him!
Economist is a business tabloid than an economist's journal. So it's views can be neglected.

Shankar , its the Lynching of innocent Muslims by Hindus that's catching the headlines.

Yes, 4/5 is indeed a good score.

But the single point lost counts a LOT. Life is more precious then your statistics.

The writing is on the wall and days are numbered for the BJP at the centre as well as
    states like Gujarat.
Its continues to live like an Ostrich buried deep in the sand upto the neck.
Yes the Congress is corrupt, we agree and let it continue to be consigned to the
dustbin eternally along with the BJP as well.

The farmers , workers , and youngsters of this country will give a fitting reply in the polls , till then let the BJP enjoy and take credit for all good events and debit the Congress for all the pitfalls.

I agree with Mrs. Gandhi that domestic misrule in some of the federal states is a challenge, be it the beef related lynching in northern India or political butchering of RSS/BJP workers in southern state of Kerala.

KRPrabhu, it is heartening to note that Hindus are being killed in India. However, do you justify the lynching of innocent people and stabbing of teen by rowdies to take revenge on those who killed Hindus ? Are these people who have been mercilessly lynched and stabbed by any means connected to those goons who killed Hindus ? If have guts and manhood, go and catch those who really killed the Hindus and not attack innocent teens. God forbid, if any of your family member is lynched to take revenge on teen attack on train will you justify and comment the same way ? Any Government, either BJP or Congress should unite India instead of dividing for political gain. Recent incident of internal killings has given boost to enemy country to encroach our land.
