Disability tax under GST insensitive: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, Jul 3 (PTI): Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi today accused the Modi government of being "insensitive" towards the most vulnerable sections of society by imposing "disability tax" on wheelchairs and Braille typewriters, and demanded its full rollback.

The GST on Braille typewriters and papers, carriages for the disabled and wheelchairs and other assistive devices have been fixed at rates varying between 5 to 18 per cent.

"GST on disability aids like wheelchairs and Braille typewriters, once again shows this government's complete insensitivity towards our most vulnerable.

"Congress Party demands a full roll back of this 'disability tax' that will put millions of our disabled people through further hardship," he said on Twitter.

The Congress party also put out a picture showing imposition of GST on wheelchairs and Braille paper.

"By hastily rolling out GST, Modi Govt has abandoned those who need its support the most. #GSTTamasha," said a tweet put out by the party on its handle.

    Pappu, dont know if you have come back from your vacations.
    If you do not know, these rates were finalised by a commitee which had the finance minsters of all the states - and that too includes congress..... It happenned only after they approved.
    Pappu should know more about this before shooting his mouth off.

    THIS IS INSULT TO DISABLED BY BJP GOVT.

    BJP THINKS DISABLED PEOPLE NOT IN POSITION TO VOTE IN ELECTIONS.

    This tax was decided by the panel which had congress finance minsters as its members. This is not new news. Pappu doesnt know it, thats all.

    THERE ARE MANY BENIFITS FOR DISABLED PERSONS OTHER THAN INDIA.

    For fertilizers, the GST was changed on the 11th hour. Likewise, when people make representation, the govt may stop GST on these items. Another item, that is sanitary pads, which are in 12% GST. It is a most essential item for women. That means, women have to pay the tax, for being a woman.

    Why special treatment for disabled. All are equal. Their Gst should be doubled. So that they can walk with tension.
    Bjp doing good thing for disabled. Or else they will keep on begging.
