Heavy rains to lash UP: Met office

Lucknow, Jul 5 (IANS): An alert has been sounded in some parts of Uttar Pradesh for Thursday after heavy rains lashed here and other places in the state on Wednesday, a Met official said.

The Regional Met office said monsoon was now "fully active" in the state. The orange code -- warning of very heavy rains -- has been flashed for many areas.

Rains started late on Tuesday night and were continuing at most places, leading to power outages and water logging in many parts here.

The weatherman said that monsoon was active in central Uttar Pradesh and overcast skies have been reported from western parts of the state and Bundelkhand. Moderate to heavy rains were predicted in these areas till Thursday.

Heavy rain in the last one week here has lead to massive waterlogging in many low lying areas in the city. These areas continue to remain under knee-deep water, the official added. There has been no cleaning of major drains of the city leading to the situation.

Allahabad has witnessed 27.2 mm of rains since Tuesday and so has Lucknow.

The mercury here has slipped to 31.2 degrees Celsius, which is five degrees below normal.

All major rivers in the state including the Ganga, Yamuna, Ghaghra and Saryu were in spate and district officials in flood prone areas were monitoring their water levels.

Some areas in western Uttar Pradesh like Meerut, Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar and Bijnore were also receiving rains.

At places where rains were yet to set in, the humidity level was very high causing huge discomfort.
