Heavy rains lash UP


Lucknow, Jul 6 (IANS): Heavy rains lashed many parts of Uttar Pradesh including the state capital on Thursday leading to inconvenience among school going children and office goers, weather officials said.

The rains which started around midnight turned into heavy downpour on Thursday morning.

In Lucknow, many localities remained water logged. In Vikasnagar, Indiranagar Sector 9, Hariharnagar, Gokhale Marg, Nighohan and Bakshi Ka Talaab, parts of freshly laid roads sunk due to the heavy flow of water.

Several trees were uprooted across the city, leading to traffic problems.

Angry residents of Ismailganj, Faizullaganj, Mulayamnagar whose houses are under knee-deep water have begun demonstrations against the failure of the civic authorities in pulling out water from the localities.

According to the regional Met office, more rains are predicted over the weekend while 88 mm of downpour was recorded in the state capital on Wednesday.

Five people were killed in rain-related incidents in Kothi (Barabanki), Hardhaurpur in Lucknow, Kanpur, Kanpur rural and Farukkhabad, respectively.
