Air India takes non-veg food off its domestic flights to stop wastage

Mumbai, Jul 10 (Deccan Chronicle): Ailing national carrier Air India has removed non-vegetarian foods menu for economy class passengers traveling in domestic flights. However, the state-owned airline will continue to offer non-vegetarian foods for its international passengers in economy class.

The carrier says it took the decision to put an end to wastage of foods and enhance its food catering services. It also says a 'only-veg' menu in economy class would avoid mix-ups and according to the carrier vegetarian foods are more in demand.

"Air India has taken conscious decision not to have non vegetarian meal in economy class on its domestic flights to reduce wastage, reduce cost and improve catering service," The Times of India quoted Air India spokesman G P Rao as saying.

This comes in the back drop of reports of Air India sellout to private players as the airline is burdened with a debt of Rs 52,000 crore. Apart from that, the airline is piling up its losses over past few years. Tata Group that had once owned and ran Air Inida has evinced interest in its buyout.

In June, Air India employees had formulated solutions to drag the carrier out of debt and loss mess. Those suggestions included cost-cutting measures advised to airline's top management. They opposed its privatisation and also proposed to cut salads from meals.

An Air India senior official had last month in an internal communication had said to its top management that on a recent flight, a cabin crew incharge walked up to him with some interesting cost-cutting measures.

"One was that in international flights economy class, he found only 20 per cent eating salad. He (the cabin crew) felt we must discontinue salad in economy class on international flights. He also felt that we must carry only around 25 copies of Shubh Yatra (AI's insight magazine) in a flight which can be kept in the magazine racks rather than on every seat to reduce weight," TOI quoted the official as saying in the letter.

It looks to me that you're going to lose if they dismantle airport taxi associations or airline associations. But sorry to say, but you have to change your field if you're in one of those associations or if you do not have skills to sustain. There is no shortcut for success.

Next initiative from Air India 'Toilets' without water to save our planet?
It is nothing but PM Modi government discouraging the passengers to take state carriers to woo privatisation.
It is easy to serve only non-veg meal rather than multiple vegetarian meal on board. Only left out is just bones if the meal delicious.
All most all airlines of the world serve both types of meals according passenger requirement. It is not Air India but central government finding the way to close the airlines.

It's dangerous for flight safety with unions in airline industry. Even airport taxi unions could be dangerous in a indirect way because airport management instead of concentrating on airport are unnecessarily dragged into taxi issue because the taxi unions pay them money. Due to union, the airline company cannot fire employees which would be a burden for the airline & they try to cut corners somewhere else like hiring pilots to fly for long duration and paying less salary which could be dangerous for flight safety.

Non veg food or veg .in AirIndia will make no difference.veg food is only dal saar with potatoe and a chapati.Rice for a change.Instaed of wasting or costreducing, they should plan first. When a ticket is booked, ask passenger whether he prefers non veg or veg.according to it ,packet can be numbered,or given .So there comes no wastage.Planning is A and O:salad on board is not very much appriciated, because salad leaves will get spoiled fast ,and doesnt taste so good even without leaves after a long time. First give good service,by fly off right time, without delay, and without cancelling flights.

Now Air India has woke up from its sleep. Now they will make a huge profit by taking off non-veg food on its domestic flights and cover up the losses it made all these years. What an idiotic idea.

Domestic flights what is the duration max. may be two hours ? Even timings are unlike Intl. flights which some times early morning or mid day and it's long journey. In domestic flights some snacks enough.

    Shankar,
Because of lack of direct flights from Kuwait and somother GCC countries we are forced to travel by AIE and not considering their service. They can charge little more and provide standard food. Some time thy provide miniature and no dry nuts or chips to munch. I usually make some provision and travel.

Why only AI (domestic sector) have such concern. Do other Airlines feel the necessity to follow similar step ?
With the proposal to privatize AI the service too will surely improve. No need to lament.

So air India will decide if people will eat only veg. How come non veg food started to become wastage? In this way Air India can never be profitable. It is indirectly informing people not to travel air India.

One more move of Bramhanshahi RSS regime.
All sorts of food get wasted every corner each day. So taking action on only Non veg food is insane move. People should know 80% of India is non veg and 90% of Non veg people travels in plane. This is unacceptable move and will surely be protested.

Better ban all type of food if these Guys are so much concern of wastage of food.

What an idiotic plan to recover 50 K Crore of debt and mismanagement by not serving Egg-Omelet and a piece of sausage. It will be great if AI also publishes its savings due to this scheme after six months.

Meanwhile, bjp must stop forcing their insane food habits down our throats. Let "pure Vegetarians" carry tiffins from their home.
