New Delhi, Jul 15: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi may not be the Prime Ministerial candidate for Congress in the upcoming 2019 General Elections.
According to multiple sources, Congress is taking a strategic shift to defeat BJP in the upcoming elections and party veterans, including Congress President Sonia Gandhi are retaking the reins of the party.
Though there is a speculation that Rahul Gandhi may be promoted as Congress chief within the party circles, certain Congress sources claim that they are not confident to make him the face of the party and pit him against Modi.
It is interesting to note that on Thursday, the Congress formed a new Communication Committee which mostly included party’s seniors like P Chidambaram, Anand Sharma, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mani Shankar Aiyar and Jairam Ramesh.
Sources also confirm that Congress is planning to fight Assembly elections upcoming in many states, under the leadership of old leaders rather than relying on Rahul’s youth brigade.
Also, it was Sonia Gandhi who tried to forge a joint opposition for Presidential elections. It was again, Sonia who tried to intercede to end the growing rupture in Bihar Grand Alliance of JD(U), RJD and Congress. These facts clearly hint that the party’s ‘old guards’ have already started taking major decisions.
Congress has been suffering massive defeats after it lost the 2014 elections. The party which was ruling in 13 states currently holds power in only 6. In Assembly elections held this year, Congress lost in Uttar Pradesh, Goa and even Manipur.
