Bengaluru: Wall of ancient temple razed for Indira Canteen, residents protest

Bengaluru, Aug 1 (DHNS): The residents of Chamarajpet protested against the construction of an Indira Canteen on the Rameshwara temple premises near Kannada Sahitya Parishat in Chamarajpet late Monday evening.

Around 60 residents gathered near the temple to protest even as an earthmover demolished the compound wall to facilitate the construction of the canteen. Although the residents successfully prevented a earthmover from demolishing the wall last week, they could do little on Monday due to the police presence.

The local residents have a lot of regard for the 300-year-old temple as it is known for its rich heritage and for the way it organises various festivals. But now, the construction of the canteen on the temple premises has caused concern among residents.

Dr A Prakash, who lives opposite the temple said, “The sanctity of the temple will be lost if a canteen is built here. I have been seeing this temple every day since my birth and I understand its value and heritage.” He has been living there for 63 years.

Another resident, Sunil said, “Women and children come here to worship. Nobody would like to see a canteen on a temple premises.”

Meanwhile, B V Ganesh, ex-BJP corporator said, “We have no objection to the Indira Canteen project. But the way in which they are allotting space to build them is absolutely unacceptable. There is no need to build a canteen on the temple premises which has such a rich history.”

Meanwhile, Kokila Chandrashekar, area corporator, said, “The land belongs to the Muzrai department and the temple authorities have not objected to the canteen. Moreover, there is enough space to build a canteen in the place. Our aim is to ensure that food is available for all classes of people.”

The residents, who said they were not against the Indira Canteen project but only the way in which it was being executed, are planning to continue their protest on Tuesday as well. Meanwhile, Ganesh said, "We will not hesitate to go to the court if the BBMP officials do not reconsider their decision to build a canteen here."

BBMP commissioner N Manjunath Prasad was not available for comment.

Very sorry state of affairs. No heritage structure of any faith should be demolished, unless otherwise its national requirement and there is no option.

Good point..., in fact, to my belief..., our honorable Ex CM BSY could probably answer better..., as to when he was CM of Karnataka - why it was not looked into...,

However, let me enlighten you.., there is a term called - Constitution of Hindustan..., written/Authored by Bharat Ratna Dr BM Ambedkar, under the direction & guidance of Bharat Ratna Pundit J Nehru.., the object of it is to provide social justice to one & all..., specially oppressed & lower section of the society..!!!

One more point to be noted here is that.., but for this constitution.., probably all wealth would have been in the hands of less than 2% self proclaimed upper class Hindu's...., (i.e., why Shri Kanaiahji was shouting..., aazaadi..., aazaadi..., brahmanwadi se aazaadi...!!! among other thing...,)

hope I clarified to some extent...,

Not convincing.....Dr Ambedker had clearly mentioned in the constitution that 10 years of time to upbringing of specially oppressed & lower sections of the society & after that every citizens will be treated equal!!!.....but it's been 70years & till today why it's not succeeded & who is responsible for that? Of course Yadiyurappa is not the right person to answer it India as a whole country is concerned !!

As you quote "probably all wealth would have been in the hands of less than 2% self proclaimed upper class Hindu's" ....But now a days you can see these 2% self claimed upper class people in every religion!!

So it's still remains the question " why only temples comes under muzrai department? Why not church & Manjid? " UNASNWERED.....

@Santhosh Udipi, why dont you ask this question directly to the one who Passed this or allowed one?Naturally a catine near a temple is out of place.,like a Bar .unless it is only a veg.or a coffee shop.

Under the pretext of development ...., in Gujarat more than 300 temple or worship places were razed...,
To be honest.., the secular tenets of Hinduism proclaim, preach & practice is - Jana seveyeh ..., Janardhana Seve...,

all FEKU's....!!! in other words...., job less...,

I knew, there will be boomerang to my comments.

I have not written my comments to hurt any religion (Hindu, Muslims, Catholics) by using word 'TEMPLE'. Temple means nothing but 'a building devoted to the worship of a god or gods'

What if I go to temple and does not have love towards my family, friends, colleagues etc.......

    Francis,

This is 300 years old temple, which was never controversial. See the heritage and belief rather seeing from religion perspective.

My answer will be the same even if a old church is demolished for canteen purpose.
