Journalist shot dead in Mexico

Mexico City, Aug 1 (IANS): Mexican journalist Luciano Rivera was shot dead in a bar in the northwestern state of Baja California, the media reported on Tuesday.

The murder took place on Monday in a bar in Rosarito, a city 16 km from the border town of Tijuana, Xinhua news agency cited a statement as saying.

The 33-year-old was an editor for the local channel CNR TV Noticias, and a reporter for a news website, the statement said.

A man, identified as Alfredo N., was arrested by police as he travelled in a taxi carrying a firearm.

According to police, Rivera was shot in the head. The suspect was arrested in the ongoing search.

A CNR TV Noticias report said Rivera had fallen victim to the climate of insecurity and "permanent instability" in Baja California.

The police have initiated an investigation into the incident.

Rivera is the eighth journalist killed in Mexico since March.

The Mexican government has vowed to improve protection for journalists in the country.
