Panaji, May 7: The Goa government formally issued notification to hand over Scarlett Eden Keeling death case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The state home ministry in the notification has said that it is pleased to accord consent to the extension of powers and jurisdiction of the members of investigation of death of the British national for the offence under section 302, 376, 328 read with 34 of Indian Penal Code.
Scarlett's body was found at Goa's popular Anjuna beach on February 18 which kicked off a major controversy in the state. The state police during their investigation had arrested two locals for their alleged involvement in the crime.
Goa police which was investigating the case said that they had completed the investigation in the case but it is being referred to the CBI as per the demand by Scarlett's mother Fiona Mackeown.
'We have not chargesheeted the case as we are waiting for the CBI to take it over,' inspector general of police Kishan Kumar told reporters here.
He said that the state police have completed the investigation.
Goa government's notification came almost a month after its formal announcement to hand over the case to CBI on the floor of the house.
Goa chief minister Digamber Kamat who had initially refused to hand over the case had bowed down to the pressures of the opposition parties on the floor of the house.
Kamat had said that they are handing over the case to CBI only to clear the doubts raised on the state police investigation.
The notification today came in pursuance of the provisions of section 6 of Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946.
