Mangaluru, Aug 2: The district BJP on Wednesday August 2 broke its silence on the death of Kavya, a student of Alva's high school, and said that the controversy and the discusses on the issue on public forms indicate that there is a 'conspiracy' to defame Dr Mohan Alva and his institution.

Addressing a press meet here, BJP MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik said, "It is unfortunate that the talented student Kavya ended her life in a suspicious manner, which has led some people to point fingers at the renowned institution. Alva's campus has a strength of over 28,000, with a teaching staff of 600. The case filed is medico-legal. We urge the police department to investigate it thoroughly so as to clear all suspicions and bring the case to its logical conclusion.

"Social media has become active ever since the death of Kavya. We could see several discussions in social media and on TV channels over Kavya's death. All such discussions and debates are unneccessary. It is totally wrong to pass judgement over Kavya's suicide case. This unneccessary discussion has instilled anxiety among the students, staff, parents.

"While it is important that justice should be done to Kavya's parents, such discussion will divert the course of investigation. Making Kavya's death a weapon, certain groups are targeting Dr Mohan Alva and conspiring to defame the institution," he said.

"Several such incidents of student suicides have happened in the district, but certain groups have preferred to remain silent on them.

"Dr Mohan Alva has agreed to cooperate in any kind of investigation. He is one of the most respected persons in the district and has served the education field for past three decades. Even after Mohan Alva agreed for investigation, discussions are taking place on TV channels and social media in an attempt to divert the case. This indicates that the irresponsibility and hidden conspiracy to defame the institution," he said.

"We condemn the attempt to slander Dr Mohan Alva's reputation and urge the police to speed up the investigation and bring out the truth," Capt Karnik said.

When asked about V S Ugrappa's visit to Mangaluru and his comments on the case, Ganesh Karnik said, "Who is Ugrappa to claim violations of academic rules and government orders? As chairperson of its expert committee on sexual violence against women and children, he should be asking questions related to his department, but instead, he is blaming certain departments over the irregularities and thus overstepping his authority. From the past one year, his committe has done nothing and I don't believe it will do anything in future either. From the past one year the committe has not given any suggestion to curb violence against women and children."
