Kundapur, Aug 3: “Mulki Sundararama Shetty was not the person who was inclined to one community. He had worked for the all round development of society. It is condemnable that two MLAs exerted pressure on the government and stayed the process of renaming Light House Hill Road after Mulki Sunderrama Shetty who had served as chairman of Vijay Bank even when the process was in final stages after approved by Mangaluru City Corporation and the government. The stay order should be revoked immediately. Strong protests will be held otherwise in the days to come,” warned religious leader of the district Bunts community B Appanna Hegde.

He was speaking in the review meeting regarding stay order on renaming Light House Hill Road, Mangaluru held by Bantara Yane Nadavara Mathra Sangha Kundapur taluk committee and Sundararama Shetty Abhimana Balaga at Kundapur R N Shetty auditorium on Wednesday, August 2.

“The head office of Vijaya Bank was on the road which was decided to be renamed. Sundararama Shetty used to go about on that road. The name was suggested because of that. He had great pride about the people of Kundapur. He was well known leader of undivided Dakshina Kannada district,” he said.

Bantara Yane Nadavara Mathra Sangha former convener Y S Hegde presided over the meeting.

Bantara Yane Nadavara Sangha Kundapur convener Sampigedi Sanjiva Shetty in his key note address said that the stay order just a day before the inaugural even after Mangaluru City Corporation had agreed, has hurt his fans. “In this connection, opinions will be collected in meetings in undivided Dakshina Kannada district, Kasargod district and other places,” he said.

    Who are these supporter of Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty , why do they want rename , why cant they name and develop a new road.

    There are many roads in mumbai with British names in kamitapura take it rename it but not light house hill road.

    I have a great respect for Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty because he was from my town and I feel proud of him.But the way these people are doing the drama of renaming some road on his name and adding some political and religious twists , political parties trying to gain mileage out of it is really shocking..Dr Shetty himself was definitely not of this category of people..

    I don't understand, why people don;t mind their own business. Now Appanna Hegde from Kundapur is raising his voice. May be M. Sunderarama sheety might have started Vijaya Bank. But that is history, now this bank is a nationalized bank. Now MCC bank Head office (founder office) is also located in the same road. They are also involved in financial activities. Shall we ask to rename under MCC bank. Moreover why this controversy . In very simple terms, it is best in the interest of society and community to avoid any communal clash / political gain, all the roads to be renamed by "SECTORS" and "Sub-Sectors". This will solve the problem once and for good. It is easy to identify also when you explain someone your location.

    Eg. Sector 15 or 20 or 23 .

    This will help to google .

    This re-naming saga seems to take on a life of its own, In the above report and the comments, the only name repeated over and over again is the Light House Hill Road as the current name of that road; why does no one mention SAC Road which was the centre of the controversy and of the agitation by SAC proponents who want the SAC Road name kept as is?

    Yah. If NN means NO.. NO... or Don't know here a small info.

    Mulki Sundar Ram Shetty along with A.B.Shetty started a Bank named Vijaya Bank very early in undivided Dakshina Kannada district and gave jobs for lot of youth of the district and the state.

    It was the time of Banking revolution and many banks were started like Canara, Corporation, Syndicate etc.

    The success of these banks caught the eye of revolutionary PM at that time Indira Gandhi. She had nationalized them and today many people found their career as well as banking service all over India. It is difficult to forget such a visionary like Mulki Sundar Ram Shetty.

    Some also asked here who is Appanna Hegde ? He is the ex-MLA of Byndoor and prominent figure in Dakshina Kannada. Those who asked like that should show the guts to ask the same in Kundapur.

    Robin is Vijaya bank more important then the College? Beside that Sunderama Shetty is known in Mulki so let them have a road, street or entire Mulki in his name. Entire people of Mangalore know this road as light house hill road or Aloysius College, beside that there is no Vijaya Bank on this street.

    Who is this Appanna Hegde? Vijaya Bank is no comparison to St. Aloysius College. I am a bunt but not in favour of changing the Road name. I request all ex-students of SAC to get united and act swiftly to settle this matter once for all.
